Lillian Mary Phinney 90, of Kelley's Island, Ohio passed away Tuesday, April 28, 2015 at Admiral's Pointe Nursing Home in Huron.
She was born December 15, 1924 in Lorain, Ohio to the late Peter and Luba (nee Dimitrova) Georgeff, both emigres from Bulgaria.
Lillian graduated from Lorain High School. She was employed as a secretary at the Thew Steam Shovel Company in Lorain and later the Standard Oil Company in Cleveland. Lillian was very active at Lorain Neighborhood House and a volunteer Meals on Wheels and the Kelley's Island Library for many decades. She was dedicated to the Civil Rights Movement, and participated in Lorain's Civil Rights Activist March in the 1960's. She was a very loving person whom enjoyed spending time on Kelley's Island with her friends and family. She was well liked by the people on the Island. Her radiant personality allowed her the honor of being Citizen of the Year on Kelley's Island.
Lillian is survived by her five children, Barbara Phinney of Seattle, WA, Leslie Fiege of Bozeman, MT, Thomas Phinney of Oberlin, OH, Michael Phinney of Columbus, OH, and Peter Phinney of Huron, Ohio; five grandchildren, Max and Eliza, children of Tom Phinney and Pat Trimmer, Tess, daughter of Mike and Kathey Phinney, David and Sarah, children of Peter and Deb Phinney; many nieces, nephews and other family members.
In addition to her parents, Lillian is preceded in death in 1993 by her loving husband, David Phinney, whom she married in 1949 at Lorain First Congregational Church and her brother, Robert Georgeff in 2004.
A graveside service will take place at 2:00 PM on Saturday, May 9, 2015 at Kelly's Island Cemetery on Kelley's Island. Chaplain Mel Sayler will officiate. Groff Funeral Homes & Crematory is assisting the family with the arrangements.
