(Mary) Irene Meyer, 96, Sandusky, passed away Thursday, May 14, 2015 at Parkvue Health Care Center.
She was born in Sandusky on September 10, 1918, the daughter of Sarah and Elwood Faler.
In 1936, after attending Sandusky High School, she married Omar Meyer Jr. early in his career at his family's business, O. E. Meyer & Sons, Inc.. They enjoyed 55 years of marriage before his passing in 1992 and had two children, Omar III (Bud) and Sally.
Irene was baptized and raised in St. Stephen Evangelical & Reformed Church, but became a member of First Congregational Church shortly after her marriage. She was an active member, volunteering in many capacities, including teaching Sunday School and helping with the Head Start program.
Irene was a Gray Lady for the Red Cross and a volunteer at Firelands Regional Medical Center for almost 12 years, retiring at the age of 90. She was also a member of the Catawba Island Club and played in the Ladies Golf Club for 45 years. Bridge was another of her favorite past times, as was knitting. She was often honored by Helpmates for the number of lap blankets she made and donated every year.
Survivors include her son Omar III (Bertha) of Norwalk, four grandchildren, seven great grand-children and five great-great grandchildren, in addition to several nieces and nephews. Irene was preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter Sally Hofer and sister, Catherine Tucker.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM, Tuesday, May 19, 2015 in the First Congregational United Church of Christ, 431 Columbus Avenue, Sandusky, Ohio. The Rev. Lenore Kure will officiate. Entombment will be in the Oakland Cemetery, Sandusky.
