Charles "Jake" Martin, 89, born and raised on Kelleys Island, now of Monroeville, passed away peacefully on June 26, 2015, surrounded by his family. He spent his last few days in Providence Care Center under the care of Stein Hospice.

He was born Charles Albert Martin, a fourth- generation islander on Kelleys Island, Ohio, on June 25, 1926.

He graduated from Kelleys Island High School and joined the Navy in 1944, where he proudly served on the USS Enterprise. After the war, he met and married Jessie Abbott, a teacher on the island at that time. He was self-employed and a jack of all trades who will forever be remembered for his feisty and passionate attitude, his love for animals, woodworking, playing cards and helping others. He was an avid fisherman, gardener, and at one time enjoyed piloting his own plane. Most of all, he cherished spending time with his family and friends. He served on the Kelleys Island Council for many years - his goal always being to preserve the island he knew and loved. He was a life member of the Elks and VFW.

He is survived by his daughter, Lizabeth (Dan) Fresch of Sandusky and his son, Charles "Chuck" (Joy) Martin of Hicksville, Ohio; seven grandchildren Danielle, Martha, Sarah, Jennifer, Natalie, Charlie, and Jeremy; seven great-grandchildren Vanessa, Lillian, Charlie, Rylan, Jakeb, Canyon, and Lila; nieces, nephews, cousins and numerous special caretakers, friends, and neighbors.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Jessie A. Martin, on April 5, 2008; his parents, Charles and Elizabeth (Lange) Martin; one sister, Elaine (Don) Galloway; and grandson, Albert "A.J." Fresch.

Friends may call from 5-8 pm Tuesday, June 30,2015, in Ransom Funeral and Cremation Service, 610 S. Washington St., Castalia, and from 10:00 AM Wednesday, July 1, 2015, until time of services at 11:00 AM in St. Michael's Catholic Church, Chappel Street, Kelleys Island. Rev. Joseph Steinbauer will officiate and burial will be in Kelleys Island Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Jessie A. Martin Memorial Scholarship Fund in care of any Fifth Third Bank; Kelleys Island Historical Society, 224 Division St., Kelleys Island 43438; or Stein Hospice, 1200 Sycamore Line, Sandusky, Ohio 44870.
