Gary K. Schimmel Sr., 80, residing in Huron, passed away Sunday afternoon, June 28, 2015 at Firelands Regional Medical Center after a brief illness.
Gary was born on August 13, 1934 in Toledo, OH to the late George and Lelah (Kester) Schimmel.
Gary graduated from Toledo Waite High School in 1952 and attended both Ohio University and the University of Toledo. He was a Veteran of the U.S. Army who proudly served his country from 1957 to 1959. He was a division manager at Columbia Gas for over 40 years before retiring in 1999. Gary was past president of the Plum Brook Country Club, Sandusky Rotary, the Erie County Chamber of Commerce, and the Jaycees. He served on the board of the Memorial Hospital, Firelands Regional Medical Center, Stein Hospice, Boy Scouts, Junior Achievement, Greater Erie Marketing Group, the Merry Go Round Museum, Third National Bank and St. Mary's Central Catholic Education Foundation. Gary was also a 32nd Degree Mason.
Gary is survived by his wife, Carolyn (Steinke) Schimmel, whom he married on September 26, 1959. He is also survived by his daughters, Wendy (Mark) Schmiedl of Sandusky and Heidi (James) Ward of Fairview Park; son, Gary (Esther) Schimmel Jr. of Huron; grandchildren, Matthew, Samantha, Gary "Trey", Hayley and Gabriel and numerous other relatives.
In addition to his parents, Gary is preceded in death by his sister, Beverly in infancy and his brother, Cullen Schimmel.
Friends may call on Wednesday, July 1, 2015 from 3:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Groff Funeral Homes & Crematory, 1607 E Perkins Ave, Sandusky. A private family graveside service will be conducted at a later date in Meadow Green Memorial Park, Huron.
