Mary C. (Zuelzke) Speir, 89, residing in Sandusky, passed away Monday, August 10, 2015 at Firelands Regional Medical Center after a brief illness.
Mary was born on July 24, 1926 in Sandusky, OH to the late Edward and Hilda (Bremer) Zuelzke.
Mary was a 1944 graduate from Sandusky High School. She was employed by the Huron City Schools, BGSU Firelands and the Sandusky Public Schools as a library assistant before her retirement in 1982. Mary was a lifelong member of St. Stephen United Church of Christ, serving in numerous leadership roles. Mary enjoyed attending the many band concerts her husband performed in over the years, including the Ohio State Alumni band and the friendships formed in the music community. Mary and Dick traveled widely in the United States and abroad. She spend happy years raising a family near the lake and loved sailing and being near the water. Mary treasured her friends and treated everyone with kindness and gentleness; above all, she was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
Mary is survived by her husband of 66 years, Richard J. Speir. She is also survived by her daughters, Linda (Robert) Carino and Barbara Speir; son, Tom Speir; grandchildren, Dana (Joshua) Jones, Julie Dunn, Christa (Brent) Bronner, Kyle Speir, Deanna (Tad) England and Rachel Speir; seven great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Marilyn (Paul) Rempes; one niece; five nephews and numerous cherished family and friends.
In addition to her parents, Mary is preceded in death by her sister, Lois A. Weilnau.
Friends may call on Friday, August 14, 2015 from 10:00 am to 11:00 am at St. Stephen United Church of Christ, 905 E. Perkins Ave., Sandusky. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 am in the church with Pastor Jerald Fenske officiating. Inurnment will follow in the church columbarium. Groff Funeral Homes & Crematory is assisting the family with arrangements.
