Orlan B. Kuns

Orlan B. Kuns, age 83, of Castalia, died Sunday morning, Sept. 13, 2015, in the Stein Hospice Care Center, Sandusky.

He was born October 13, 1931, in Castalia, and was a 1949 graduate of Margaretta High School, where he played on the last 6 man football team, and received the class of 1949 Athletic Award.

He was employed by Elmer Borchardt for 28 years, and was Erie County Superintendant of Buildings and Grounds for 15 years retiring in 1995. He served as a Castalia Village Councilman for 9 years, served on the Zoning Appeals Board, and served as Mayor of Castalia for 10 years. He was a Korean War Veteran, serving with the 13th Helicopter Transportation Co.

He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Castalia, where he was Sunday School Superintendant and teacher, and served as a Deacon and Elder. Orlan was a member and Past Master of Science Lodge #50, F. & A.M.; Singara Grotto; 32 Degree Mason, Scottish Rite, Valley of Toledo; former board member of Serving our Seniors; life member of the American Legion Post #83, and the Amvets; and a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local #18. He enjoyed softball, golf, travel, and spending time with his grandchildren and family.

Orlan is survived by his wife, the former Helen Burr, to whom he was married for 60 years; one daughter Kay Ann (Derek Fick) Smith of Oak Harbor; one son Martin L.(Laura) Kuns of Highland Heights, OH; 4 grandchildren Martin A. and Vincent Kuns and Justin (Lauren) Smith and Brett Smith ; 2 great grandchildren Symon and Lola Smith; one sister Joan Crawford of Castalia; 3 brothers Donald (Alice) Kuns of Castalia, Paul (Linda) Kuns of Bellevue, and Charles (Barbara) Kuns of Castalia; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents Luther and Pauline (Bateman) Kuns; brother-in-law Dudley Crawford; granddaughter Vanessa Kuns; niece Angela Kuns Tolley; and nephew Jeffrey Charles Kuns.

Friends may call from 6 - 8 PM Tuesday, Sept. 15, 2015, in the Ransom Funeral and Cremation Service, 610 S. Washington St., Castalia, and from 10 AM Wednesday, Sept. 16, 2015, until time of services at 11 AM in Grace Lutheran Church, 203 S. Washington St., Castalia. The Rev. Philip Gardner will officiate, and burial will be in Castalia Cemetery.
