Richard "Dick" S. Wennes, 75, of Huron, passed away quietly and peacefully early Sunday morning, September 27, 2015 surrounded by his loving family.
He was born on March 27, 1940 in Sandusky, OH to the late Richard C. and Elizabeth (Sloat) Wennes.
Dick was 1958 graduate from Sandusky High School and a 1962 graduate of Bowling Green State University. A beloved husband, father and grandfather, as well as a friend and mentor to many; Dick was a dedicated teacher and a successful coach in the Huron City School district for 35 years. He coached football and basketball for more than 35 years at Huron and Edison High Schools. He was the head coach of the 1983 AA State Champion girls basketball team at Huron and once held a record for 72 consecutive wins at Huron High School. Dick was inducted in the Huron Athletic Hall of Fame in 2001. He spent many summers umpiring for the Sandusky Slow Pitch League as well as carrying drywall for Huron Cement.
Dick was a 50 year lifetime member of the Sandusky Elks Lodge #285 and a devoted fan of both the Cleveland Browns and Cavaliers. A former Huron city councilman, Dick was still active as a local sports announcer and analyst on WLEC radio. He also served as a vestry member at Grace Episcopal Church in Sandusky.
Dick is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 47 years, Karen (Smith) Wennes. He is also survived by his son; Rhett Wennes of Huron; daughter, Kerri (Jason) Ziegler of Sandusky; grandchildren, Kailee and Drew Wennes of Huron and their mother, Amy M. Wennes and Elizabeth, Jacob and Joseph Ziegler of Sandusky; sister, Ann (Wennes) Glass of Erie, PA; niece, Jennifer Fisher of Gainesville, VA and nephew, Donald Glass of Columbus; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Kim and Rex Harris of Westerville, OH; several cousins, and a special granddog, Ellie.
In addition to his parents, Dick is preceded in death by his son, Richard A. Wennes (2013) of Huron.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, October 2, 2015 at 10:00 am at Grace Episcopal Church, 315 Wayne St., Sandusky with Rev. Jan Smith Wood officiating. Inurnment will take place in the church columbarium. A celebration of Dick's life will follow at Sawmill Creek Lodge North Hall from 12:00 - 3:00 pm. Groff Funeral Homes & Crematory is assisting the family with arrangements.
