In 1951 he enlisted in the Army and rode his Harley-Davidson motorcycle to Maryland for Gun Repair School. He was flown to the war in Korea where he traveled in a van with two other men behind the front lines fixing M1 rifles, 30 caliber carbine rifles, and 50 caliber machine guns. After two years of service he came back to the U.S. by ship.

Farming was his occupation, and he drove truck in the off season. He was part owner of Easy Way Trash Service in the late 1970's. Howard was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church. He was a man of few words but will be missed by many. He lived in the same house on his farm for the last 60 years. For many years he rode his bicycle around the area. He also enjoyed tinkering in his shop and building windmills. Howard was an avid traveler, which included four driving trips out west, and an Alaskan cruise.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Bernard and Eleanor (Weichel) Riley, by his brothers, Leon, Paul, Don, Alvin, Frank, and Fred; and by his sister, Sr. Charlotte Rita Riley.

Howard is survived by his wife of 60 years, Dolores (Dee) Sadler Riley; by three children, Ronald of Albuquerque, N.M., Mark (Shannon) of Norwalk, Ohio, and Christina (Dan) Spangler of Norwalk, Ohio; by 5 grandchildren, Shannon, Nick, Ryan, Frank, and Mary; by 6 great grandchildren; by his brother, Raymond of Norwalk, Ohio; by his sister, Helen Bister of Claremont, California; and many nieces and nephews to whom he was "Uncle Howdy".
