David Cornell, 90, died on October 31, 2015, at Norwalk Memorial Home in Norwalk, OH.
He was born August 19, 1925, in Elmira, NY, the middle son of George D. and Marie B. Cornell of Campbell, NY.
David served in the U.S. Navy (1944-1946). On December 21, 1948, David married Barbara Ann Crosby of Youngstown, OH, whom he had met as a student at Ann Arbor. David received a PhD in chemical engineering from the University of Michigan in 1952. His doctoral research focused on the underground flow of natural gas and he made contributions to both the Handbook of Natural Gas Engineering and the Encyclopedia Americana.
David is survived by his wife Barbara, currently at Norwalk Memorial Home, and their four sons: Thomas (Ms. Terry Byrne) of Rochester, NY; Donald (Diann) of Bloomfield, NJ; William (Linda) of Lafayette, IN; and John (Cindy Helmling) of Indianapolis, IN. He is survived by eleven grandchildren: Steven Cornell, Brian (Kathleen) Cornell, Justin Cornell, Emily Cornell, Anna Schott (Robert), Ruth Smith (Marcus), Evan Cornell (Amanda), Allison Riley, Dylan Riley, Adrian Helmling-Cornell, Channing Helmling-Cornell; and six great-grandchildren: Emma and Luke Schott, Jonah and Aida Smith, and Laurelin and Philomena Cornell.
David was preceded in death by brothers Edwin and John Cornell. David is survived by his sisters-in-law, Dorothy Manning of Bluff Point, NY, and Catherine Cornell of South Charlestown, WV, and their children.
David was full professor at Mississippi State University from 1961-1986.
He was active in the Presbyterian Church in Starkville, MS and in Norwalk. David was a beekeeper as well as an assistant scoutmaster and was a longtime Lion's Club member. He was instrumental in establishing the Starkville (Mississippi) Civic Orchestra in 1969, for which he drew on his earlier experiences playing violin with the Ann Arbor Civic Orchestra.
David was a faithful follower of Jesus Christ, a devoted husband, a gentle father, loving grandfather, and a lifelong scholar. He will be dearly missed.
There will be a Memorial Service to celebrate David's life to be scheduled at a later date. Interment will be at Edgewood Cemetery in Ashtabula, OH. Memorial contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church of Norwalk.
