Thomas Joseph Hohler, age 79 years was called home to Heaven on Tuesday, December 29, 2015.
Tom was born and raised in Norwalk, OH, graduated from St. Paul High School in 1953 and went on to serve in the US Army at Fort Richardson, AK, from 1954-1956.
Tom wanted everyone to know that he married "the love of my life," June, on October 25, 1958. The Lord blessed Tom and June with three children, Michele, Pam and Linc. It was evident to all who knew him that Tom treasured his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He enjoyed attending their school and athletic events, was proud of every accomplishment and was always their biggest fan. Family members and others alike, could anticipate his sideline shout of encouragement, "Aggressive!" before every game, match or race.
Tom attended Ohio University and then began a 37 year career with the Dupont Company, moving his family from Huron, OH to Dupont sites in Brevard, NC, Old Hickory, TN, Wilmington, NC and Wilmington, DE. Upon retiring from Dupont Engineering Department Construction Division in 1998, he began a second career as head chauffer for the grandchildren attending St. John's Christian Day School.
Tom lived a life of service to his family and to his Savior, Jesus. He was a charter member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, served as church president and worked tirelessly on various committees and building projects. He also spent countless hours there fixing what was broken, painting, cleaning and keeping the property "standing tall". His expectations were high and he wasn't afraid to get his hands dirty. Tom was a man of few words who led by example and thus, earned the respect of those with whom he worked and especially of those with whom he shared the big heart under the broad shoulders.
Welcoming Tom into Heaven are his beloved grandson, Ben Lewis, father and mother, John and Verna Hohler, sisters, Betty Welfle and Ethel Windau, and brothers, Milton and Jack Hohler.
Tom will always be lovingly remembered by his wife of 57 years, June; children, Michele (Henry) Dorrum, Pamela (Robert) Lewis, Lincoln (Anne) Hohler; grandchildren, Matthew (Sadie), Adam (Sherry), Joseph (Jackie), Jacob (Kristi) and Abigail Gawel, Anna, Ahren and Luke Lewis, Alisa and Amanda Hohler; and great-grandchildren David, Sophia, Amelia, Bentley, Zeke Thomas, and Olivia.
While our hearts are heavy, it is our great joy that Tom (Dad, Pop, Grandpa, Pa) now shares in Jesus' victory over sin and death. Tom died as he lived, a redeemed child of God and now, forever enjoying the place prepared especially for him in God's kingdom of peace, perfection and glory!
A Christian Funeral Service was held for Tom at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church. A graveside service will be held in Milan Cemetery, Milan, OH, on Monday, January 4, 2016, at 12:00 noon.
Memorial gifts may be made to Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary, 11831 N. Seminary Dr., Mequon, WI 53092-1546.
