Willie Hampton, Sr., 86, of 1932 Putnam St., Sandusky, transitioned over to see the Heavenly Father in the Ohio Veterans Home after a lengthy illness on Saturday, January 16, 2016.
He was born on Sept. 14, 1929 in DeKalb, Miss. to the late Hop and Iola (Adams) Hampton.
Willie grew up in Meridian, Miss., where he attended school. Later in life he earned his G.E.D. Accepting Christ at an early age, Willie was a faithful member of New Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church under the pastoral leadership of the late Rev. Fred Tucker, Pastor Eddy Henry, and the presiding Pastor Curtis L. Johnson, Jr. He served as a trustee, usher board member, and sang in the male chorus.
Willie served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, being honorably discharged. His unit was the COC 51st Signal Battalion, and for his service Willie earned the National Defense, United Nations, and Korean Service Medals. He worked at Vulcan Material for 30 years until closing, then for Stanley Product, retiring in 1992.
United in marriage to Melna Hampton on January 4, 1952 in Toledo, the couple raised 13 children and three grandchildren.
Willie leaves fond memories with his seven daughters, Bonnie Lamar Hampton, of Louisville, KY, Doreen Hampton, of Oklahoma City, JoAnn Hampton, Donna Atkins, Elaine Hampton, Lisa (Eugene) Moore, and Harlene Hampton, all of Sandusky; five sons, James B. (Thomasine) Williams, Chester (Beth) Williams, Curtis Williams, Stanley Chaney, and Willie Hampton, Jr., all of Sandusky; two grandchildren, Kizzy and Bricen Hampton; 40 other grandchildren; 28 great-grandchilren; 25 great-great-grandchilren; three sisters, Inez Scott and Betty Lou Hampton, of Meridian, Miss., and Gennie Mae Hampton, of Clarksdale, Miss.; a sister-in-law, Elizabeth Williams, of Detroit; and a brother-in-law, John Royster, of Pittsburgh.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Melna Hampton, in 1999; son, Joseph; two grandsons, Hermon Moore, III and Brooks Hampton; and a brother, Willie James McClemon.
Friends may call on Friday, January 22, 2016 from 6-8 P.M. at New Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church, 1920 Eddy Henry Way, Sandusky. Funeral services will be at 12 P.M. on Saturday at the church. Burial will follow in Oakland Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the church.
