Stuart N. Heaberlin

Stuart N. Heaberlin, 95, of Sandusky passed away Saturday, January 23, 2016 in the Stein Hospice Care Center following a brief illness.

He was born June 21, 1920 in Norton, VA, and lived most of his life in Sandusky, Ohio.

He served in WWII in the First Army as a Sherman Tank driver, his crew being credited with two Tiger Tank kills. He was captured during the Battle of the Bulge while moving to relieve Bastogne. He was a POW in Dresden, Germany from Dec. 19, 1944 - May 7, 1945. He was awarded a Purple Heart Medal, a Good Conduct Medal and a European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with four bronze stars. Stuart was a produce manager for Pick & Pay Grocery Stores for 30 years before he retired.
Stuart was a volunteer at the Ohio Veterans Home in Sandusky since 1999 and often gave speeches about his time as a POW. He was an avid traveler and most recently took cruises to both Alaska and Hawaii.

He is survived by two siblings, Nevagene Branham of Kemper, KY and William Heaberlin of Wise, VA; two grandchildren, Melissa (Heaberlin) Pignotti, Western Springs, IL and Sean Heaberlin, Maumee, OH; six great grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Edith Heaberlin, 1971; his second wife Nell Heaberlin, 1999; his son, Stuart N. Heaberlin Jr., 1989; his parents, Isaac E. and Margaret F. (Davidson) Heaberlin; his sisters, Lynell (Heaberlin) Wells, 2013 and Eleanor (Heaberlin) Mullett, 2015; and brother, Woody Heaberlin, 1987.

Friends may call Wednesday, January 27, 2016 from 3-7:00 PM and Thursday, January 28, 2016 from 10:00 AM until the time of funeral service at 11:00 AM at the First Christian Church, 3410 Hayes Avenue, Sandusky. Pastor Don Spurlock will officiate. Entombment will be at Meadow Green Memorial Park, Huron.
