James W. "Bill" Vanderhoof, 94, of Sandusky passed away Friday evening, January 29, 2016 in the Firelands Regional Medical Center, Sandusky following a brief illness.
He was born on February 16, 1921 in Russell, KY to Harold and Katherine Vanderhoof and had severed in the U.S. Army.
Bill retired in 1983 from the former New Departure-Hyatt, Division of General Motors where he had been employed for 33 years. Prior to this he worked in construction. Bill was a member of First Christian Church, Sandusky where he served as a trustee for 38 years, Local #913, U.A.W., American Legion Post 83, V.F.W. Post 2529, AMVETS Post 17, Huron Eagles Aerie 2875, Senior Men's Fellowship Club, a 60 year member of the Perseverance Lodge No. 329, F.&A.M., Royal Arch Masons of Ohio, Sandusky City Chapter No. 72, R.A.M., Sandusky City Council No. 26, R.&S.M., Erie Commandery No. 23, K.T., 32nd Degree Mason, Scottish Rite, Valley of Toledo, Eleanor Chapter No. 331, O.E.S., Firelands Shrine Club and the Zenobia Shrine Club. Bill was a very special person who was devoted to family and friends. He was always there for everyone in their time of need.
He is survived by one sister, Dorothy Evans; a special friend, Betty Zolman; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Lucille R. (Rice) Vanderhoof in 2001; one step son, Elmer Wilson; his parents; five brothers, Clifford, Harold, Jr. Lloyd, Charles and Gene; one half-brother, Cecil Trent and one sister, Lucille.
Friends may call Tuesday, February 2, 2016 from 4-7:00 PM at the Pfeil Funeral Home, Sandusky Chapel, 617 Columbus Avenue, Sandusky, where Perseverance Lodge will hold a memorial service at 7:00 PM Tuesday. On Wednesday, the body will be taken to First Christian Church, 3410 Hayes Avenue, Sandusky to lie in state from 10:00 AM until time of funeral service at 11:00 AM. Pastor Don Spurlock will officiate. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery, Sandusky.
Memorial contributions may be made to the First Christian Church or to the donor's favorite charity.
