James "J.J." H. Johns

James "J.J." H. Johns, 90, of Milan, passed away Sunday, January 31, 2016 at Firelands Regional Medical Center surrounded by his loving family. He was recently a resident of the Ohio Veterans Home in Sandusky and the Cleveland VA Hospital.

J.J. was born in Oil City, Pennsylvania to the late James E. and Antoinette (Haight) Johns.

J.J. was a graduate of the University of Michigan, as well as the Kings Point Merchant Marine Academy. He was also a proud World War II Veteran, serving in the Merchant Marines. He was employed at Growers Solutions in Milan for 50 years, and served as Vice President. He was an avid sailor his entire life, and his beloved Tartan-10 "Skim" will continue to be sailed and raced by his grandchildren, who, in turn, are all sailors. J.J. was a member of the St. Johns United Church of Christ, Sandusky Sailing Club, Inter Lake Yachting Association, Milan Rotary Club, Milan American Legion Post #0527, Perseverance Lodge #329 of Sandusky, National Maritime Historical Society, and lifetime member of the Scottish Rites Free Masons.

J.J. is survived by his wife of 60 years, Patricia (Moyer) Johns; sons, James (Charity) Johns of Milan, Curtis (Sherry) Johns of Berlin Height; daughters, Laurie (Jeff) Huber of Milan, Lisa (Dennis) Cutnaw of Norwalk, and Annette Johns of Norwalk; grandchildren, Alexander (Megan) Huber, Brenden Cutnaw, Austin Cutnaw, Dr. James Tyler Johns, and Andra Johns (U.S. Navy); brother, Robert (Ruth) Johns of Florida; and several loving nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, J.J. is preceded in death by his brother-in-law, Wesley Moyer.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, February 3rd, 2016 at 11:30 a.m. at the Sandusky Sailing Club, 742 E. Water Street, Sandusky, OH 44870. Pastor Wendy Schindler-Chasney will be officiating. A Celebration of Life gathering and luncheon will follow. Groff Funeral Homes & Crematory is assisting the family with arrangements.
