Ted Blatt

Ted Blatt, 90, of 332 Division St., Kelleys Island, passed away late Sunday night, February 21, 2016 at Stein Hospice Care Center in Sandusky, surrounded by his family.

He was born on Kelleys Island on October 24, 1925 to the late Norman and Pauline (Kurtz) Blatt. He was a graduate of Kelleys Island School in 1943.

Ted was a U.S. Navy veteran, stationed in Pearl Harbor. He was a Seaman First Class (Gunners Mate), and was awarded the Asiatic-Pacific Ribbon and Victory Medal. Upon his return, Ted fell in love with and married his sweetheart, islander, Barbara "Bonnie" Bickley, on September 2, 1950 at St. Michael's Church, Kelleys Island. He was an independent dealer for Standard Oil for more than 30 years, owning and operating Ted Blatt Sohio in Sandusky.

A lifelong islander, he was a member of Kelleys Island Zion United Methodist Church, VFW Post 9908, Kelleys Island Historical Association, Kelleys Island Landowners Association, a regular contributor for the Kelleys Island Life publication, a volunteer fireman on Kelleys Island, licensed pilot, talented athlete, and well-known island historian. Ted was also a proud sponsor of auto racing at Sandusky Speedway for many years.

Ted appreciated all aspects of the lake, especially fishing, skiing, and cruising on his Lyman boats. He enjoyed touring the island on his motorcycle and golf cart. He was a collector of many things, most notably keys and bottle openers. A true family man, Ted always put those he loved before all else. He will be remembered for his kind spirit and his story telling.

Ted is survived by his daughter, Deb (Keith) Haig, of Kelleys Island; son, Rob (Brenda) Blatt, of Hilliard; five grandchildren, Kelsey, Megan, Tristan, Tyler (Emily), and Tory; sister, Dorothea "Do" Sprau; adored nieces and nephews; and many dear friends on the island.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 61 years, Barbara "Bonnie" Blatt; and siblings, Vyrl, Norma, William "Bud", and Milton.

At Ted's request, cremation will take place. A celebration of life will be held at a later date on Kelleys Island. Memorial contributions may be made in Ted's name to Stein Hospice, 1200 Sycamore Line, Sandusky, OH 44870, Kelleys Island Historical Association, 224 Division St., Kelleys Island, OH 43438, or Kelleys Island Volunteer Fire Department, 121 Addison St., Kelleys Island, OH 43438.
