Gary E. "Butch" Mayer

Gary E. "Butch" Mayer, 71, of Norwalk, Ohio, passed away unexpectedly at his home, Saturday, April 2, 2016.

He was born January 7, 1945, in Lorain, Ohio, to the late Franklin E. and Lucille R. (Knispel) Mayer.

Gary was a 1964 graduate of Vermilion High School, and was a Veteran of the U.S. Army serving in Vietnam, and received the Bronze Star Medal. He worked at the Ford Motor Company in Lorain, Ohio from 1964 until his retirement in 1996, and had driven truck for Heitsche Trucking.

Gary was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church in Norwalk, Ohio, and St. Anthony Catholic Church in Milan, Ohio. He was also a life member of Amvets Post #22 in Vermilion, Ohio, American Legion Post #397 of Vermilion, Ohio, and Firelands Post #2743 Veterans of Foreign Wars of Norwalk, Ohio.

Gary was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He loved his friends and was quite a jokester with them. Gary also enjoyed NASCAR, and the Cleveland Cavaliers.

He is survived by his wife of 46 ½ years, Martha A. "Marty" (Kozak) Mayer whom he married July 12, 1969. Gary is also survived by his children, Stacey and Eric Mundy of Norwalk, Ohio, Jodi and Craig Conklin of Norwalk, Ohio, and Nicole and Tom Phillips of Norwalk, Ohio, by his grandchildren, Michael Mundy, Meghan Mundy, Taylor Phillips Jordan Mayer, Kiersten Phillips, and Amanda Phillips, and by his great grandchild, Brady Fritz.

He is also survived by his sister, Shirley Mayer of Vermilion, Ohio, by his brothers, Russell and Liz Mayer, Ron Mayer, Mark and Cathy Mayer, all of Vermilion, Ohio, by his sister in law, Fran and Bill Beursken of Bradenton, Florida, and several nieces and nephews.

Gary was preceded in death by his mother and father in law, James and Rosella (Goretzki) Kozak. Friends may call on Tuesday, April 5, 2016 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in Walker Funeral Home, 98 West Main Street, Norwalk, Ohio. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, April 6, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. in St. Paul Catholic Church, 91 East Main Street, Norwalk, Ohio. Rev. Paul Schreiner and Rev. Anthony Recker will officiate. Interment will be in St. Paul Cemetery with military honors.
