Samuel Walter Lewis, Sr.

Samuel Walter Lewis, Sr. of Sandusky, OH, after 84 years was called home to his heavenly reward. early Saturday morning, April 9, 2016, in the Firelands Regional Medical Center, after a lengthy illness.

Brother Samuel was born June 13, 1931, in Rydall, Georgia the fifth child of the late Henry and Berta (Jones) Lewis.

Brother Sam attended public school in Cartersville, Georgia, and received his GED at Sandusky High School in 1972.

Sam is survived by his loving wife, of 39 years, Sister Gloria Juanita (Perry) Lewis. His birth children are sons, Samuel Walter Lewis, Jr.; Coy Mitchell Lewis; Joseph Henry Lewis of Sandusky, Ohio , his daughters are Gwendolyn (Carey) Alexander, Jeanie (Gary) Crabb, Felina Lewis , Ramona (Leroy Johnson) Lewis, and Paula Lewis, all of Sandusky. Brother Sam has two beloved and adopted daughters; Erichia Lewis of Charolette, N.C. and Shelia (Lewis) McGill of Dayton, OH; adopted sons, Roderick (Kylie) Lewis of Kennesaw, GA, and DeQuarius (Nichole ) Lewis; four grandchildren, Jordan, Lexi, Aaliyah, and Ava of this marriage union. Also, a host of grandchildren, nephews, nieces, friends, and a "loving" sister, Frances Johnson of Sandusky, OH.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters, Sarah Genease Hyatt, Katherine Louise Lewis, and Helen Anita Robinson; brothers, Lish Andrew Lewis, Charles Ezell Lewis and Joe Lewis, who died in infancy.

Sam moved to Sandusky, Ohio in 1950. In 1951 served in
the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He served on the front lines 10 months and 17 days. He received two citations; The w/2 Bronze Campaign Stars and The United Nations Service Medal. He was honorably discharged, after achieving the rank of Staff Sargent.

Brother Sam was employed at Waldock Packing Company for many years, and 17 years at General Motors, Sandusky.

He loved most, spending quality time with the love of his life, wife and best friend Sister Gloria and their family. Over the years brother Sam loved to render heartfelt service to his church, The Second Baptist Church, where he served for 20 years as Chairman of The Ministry of Trustees. Also, in his many years of joyous community and other service, including, but limited to; "The Prince Hall Masonic Lodge # 85". He achieved ‘Mason of the Year 1990". October 19, 1994 he achieved the 32nd degree of The Bezaleel Consistory.

He greatly enjoyed umpiring for, The Little Atom League Baseball ages 6-8, 8-10, and later even up to the teenagers. He was a member of The Ohio State Athletic Association.

Brother Sam's philosophy of life is, "Only what you do for Christ will last".

Friends may call from 6-8 P.M. on Thursday, April 14, 2016, in Toft Funeral Home & Crematory, 2001 Columbus Avenue, Sandusky. On Friday at 12 P.M. Noon will commence the formal celebration of life and home going service in Second Baptist Church, 315 Decatur St. Sandusky. Pastor Reginald J. Taylor will deliver the eulogy and Minister Bobby Langdon will officiate. Burial with military honors will be in Oakland Cemetery.
