Elaine R. (Espy) Johnson, 77, of Sandusky, went home to be with the Lord early Sunday morning, May 1, 2016, at Stein Hospice Care Center after a lengthy illness.
Elaine was born on November 4, 1938 in Nashville, TN to Bennie and Inez G. (Fuqua) Espy, now deceased, and was a 1957 graduate of Sandusky High School.
She was employed at the Erie Army Depot in Port Clinton, OH and at National Aeronautical Space Administration (NASA) in Sandusky before retiring from New Departure in Sandusky after 28 years of service as an executive secretary. After retirement she volunteered and then was employed at the Salvation Army. In her spare time, she enjoyed playing bingo, watching sports, especially baseball, and spending time with her wonderful friends. She was a loving and devoted mother, grandmother and friend and was a long time member of Ebenezer Baptist Church, Sandusky where she was a member of the Usher Board. In 1973she became a member of Faith Memorial Assembly of God, Sandusky.
She will be sadly missed by her son, Pastor Mark A. (Mary) Johnson of Calif.; three grandchildren, Natasha, Jasmine, and Michael Johnson; two great-grandchildren, Harmony and Noah of Calif.; one sister, Rozene (Carl) Augustus of Sandusky; one brother, Atty. Ben E. (Kathy) Espy of Columbus, OH; seven nieces, Kaye (Rev. Glen Sr.) Burel of Sandusky, Carla Augustus of Columbus, Tiffanie Augustus of Columbus, Elizabeth Espy of Atlanta, GA, Dr. Amy (David) Espy-Smith of Bowie, MD, Dr. Laura (Stephen) Espy-Bell of Blacklick, OH, and Atty. Lynne (Ko J) Espy-Williams of Atlanta, GA; cousins, Lawrence (Jean) Fuqua of Sandusky; Paul (Polly) Deaderick of Denver, CO and numerous other cousins, great-nieces, great-nephews, relatives and friends.
Much gratitude to Dr. Brian Murphy, medical oncologist, and his staff for the great care and attention they provided to Elaine for the past ten years and to the special friends who cared for her during that time including but not limited to Althea Johnson, Charlotte Davis, Angelique Frazier, Dora Grant, Jacqueline Darden, Cathy Borden and her niece, Kaye Burel.
Friends may call on Wednesday, May 11, 2016 from 10:00 am until the time of the funeral services at 11:00 am at Groff Funeral Homes & Crematory, 1607 E. Perkins Ave. Sandusky. Officiates are the Rev. Glen Burel, Sr.,Pastor Ken Hiser and Elaine's son Pastor Mark Johnson. Burial will follow the funeral service at Meadow Green Memorial Park, Huron, OH. Arrangements are entrusted to Groff Funeral Homes & Crematory, 1607 E. Perkins Ave., Sandusky.
