Howard W. Nemitz

Howard W. Nemitz, 102, of Sandusky and most recently of the Portland Place, Sandusky passed away Sunday morning June 5, 2016 at his residence following a brief illness.

He was born on February 25, 1914, the only child of Carl & Anna (Gruhlke) Nemitz. He attended Sandusky Public Schools, and graduated from Sandusky High School in 1934, where he was a member of one of the very early SHS A Cappella choirs.

In his younger life, Howard served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Pacific theater. He worked until retirement at age 60 as a machinist at Apex & later at Barr Rubber. He helped organize & prepare food for many of the reunion picnics for former Apex employees over the years. For many years he organized & cooked for the annual picnics of the Blind of Erie County and the Sandusky Public School employees.
Howard was a long time member of the First Presbyterian Church, serving as an usher, and for many years as the Chief cook for the Church's annual Lenten Luncheons. In his younger years, he grew up in, and had been a member of Zion Lutheran Church of Sandusky.

Howard was a 78 year member of Perseverance Masonic Lodge #329 F. & A.M. where he had served as the Senior Steward for many years. He was also a member & past officer of Sandusky City Chapter #72 R.A.M., Sandusky City Council #26 R. & S.M., & Erie Commandery #23 Knights Templar. He was a 75 year member & a Past Monarch of Singara Grotto MOVPER. He prepared & served hundreds of meals for meetings & banquets for the Masonic Bodies & the Grotto over the years. He was a 32nd degree Mason, Scottish Rite Valley of Toledo, and was also a member of the Zenobia Shrine Temple, & the Firelands Shrine Club. Howard was an 80 year Senior Demolay. He was also a member of the Lowell C. Hein Post #2529 V.F.W.

He is survived by his nephew, Robert (Michelle) Reardon, great nephew Adam (Amanda) Reardon & their children Sean & Sara, and great niece Laura (Jason) Zumbaugh & their child Seth. He is also survived by his great nephew Billy (Christy) Werner & their children Griffin, Charlie, & Lacey. His sister-in-law, Marion Werner, and late nephew Bill's wife Barbara Werner also survives. Also surviving is special cousin Barbara (Bill) Deming, as well as several cousins in the Nemitz & Gruhlke families.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his loving wife of 66 years, Ruth (Oliver) Nemitz in 2011, and his very close nephew, William "Bill" Werner in September 2015.

Friends may call from 4:00 PM - 7:00 PM Tuesday June 7, 2016 at the Pfeil Funeral Home, Sandusky Chapel, 617 Columbus Ave, Sandusky, where Masonic Memorial Services will be held at 7:00 PM Tuesday. On Wednesday, June 8, 2016 friends may call from 9:30 AM until the time of funeral service at 10:30 AM in the First Presbyterian Church, 265 Jackson Street, Sandusky. The Rev. Robert R. Bottoms will officiate. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery Sandusky.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, 265 Jackson Street, Sandusky, or the Masonic Temple Memorial Fund, 304 Wayne Street, Sandusky.
