Leah Mae (Blackert) Flaherty, 94, of Norwalk, Ohio, went peacefully to Heaven, Saturday afternoon, June 18, 2016, in Gaymont Nursing Center.
She was born July 11, 1921, in Fitchville Township, Huron County, Ohio, to the late Archie W. and Dorothy (Marett) Croshaw.
Leah was a 1939 graduate of New London High School. She was a former employee of Air Service Command in Dayton, Ohio, Railway Express in Detroit, Michigan, Durkee Foods in Norwalk, Ohio, and the C.E. Ward Company in New London, Ohio. Leah married Carl Blackert of Delphi, Ohio, July 31, 1953, and lived as a farmer's wife for 21 years; Carl passed away in 1974. She moved to Norwalk, Ohio, in 1979. Leah was a member of the Norwalk First United Methodist Church, the Fitchville Grange, a local organ music group, and was a former pink lady at Fisher-Titus Medical Center. She had a lifelong love for music, playing the violin and trombone in high school. She was affectionately known as the "Accordion Lady", entertaining monthly at area nursing homes, birthday parties, and many other special events for over 45 years. Leah played the piano and organ at the Delphi United Methodist Church, and was well known for her fastnacht pastries. She loved to travel, share her musical gifts with a big smile, and remembered friends and family with greeting cards.
She married her biggest music fan, Joseph Flaherty, October 3, 1987; he passed away in 2005.
Leah is survived by her niece, Carol Berry, by her great nephews, Mike Berry, Scott (Sharon) Berry, Christopher (Lisa) Berry, by her great niece, Robin (Joe) Grant, and many great great nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her cousins, John (Ann) Marett, Carolyn (Lawrence) Burson, Jeanine (Dennis) Smith, Mary (Eddie) Stoll, Sally (Nate) Potts, Wilma Frate, Gordon (Carol) Marett, Connie (Sal) Midolo, Ron Marett, George (Belle) Marett, Alyce Crowe, Alice Cochenour, and Audrey (Al) Peterson, by her stepsons, Robert Flaherty, and Greg (Fran) Flaherty, by her step grandchildren, Christian, Ian, Sean, and Megan Spreitzer, and by very special friends, Bonnie and Gary Albright.
Friends may call on Wednesday, June 22, 2016 from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service at 11:00 a.m. in the Norwalk First United Methodist Church, 60 West Main Street, Norwalk, Ohio. Rev. Dr. Brian Oglesbee will officiate. Interment will be in North Fairfield Cemetery.
