Betty W. Rinderle

Betty W. Rinderle, 97, who inspired education for the developmentally challenged and promoted women's education, died June 2, 2016 at Shell Point Village in Fort Myers Florida.

Betty attended Wells College and graduated from Western Reserve University. She taught school in Sandusky, Ohio before marrying Karl Rinderle. Betty and Karl were instrumental in the formation of the Erie County Council for Exceptional Children and for twelve years Betty volunteered as the Executive Secretary. A tax levy in 1952 made possible the building of a school which the county commissioners named The Betty Rinderle School of Erie County. She was elected a fellow in the American Association on Mental Deficiency (now known as the American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities).

Betty was a cherished charter member of Chapter B.E. of the P.E.O. Sisterhood and served as President of the Ohio State Chapter in 1980-81. She served on the boards of the Erie County United Fund and Cancer Society and was active in the Order of Eastern Star and Grace Episcopal Church. As president of the Community Council, she was responsible for the publication of the first county directory of organizations and social services agencies.

Honors include being named Woman of the Year by the Sandusky Register and recognition by the Sandusky Chamber of Commerce, service clubs and city government.

She moved with her husband to Shell Point Village in south Fort Myers, FL, in 1982.

She is survived by nieces, nephews and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, son, Karl, Jr., brother, Julian Wilhelm, and parents, Julia and August Wilhelm.

Friends may call Thursday, July 7, 2016 from 4:00 - 7:00 PM at the Pfeil Funeral Home, Sandusky Chapel, 617 Columbus Avenue, Sandusky.
