Jeanne Elizabeth Hill, 94, passed away July 8, 2016 at Norwalk Memorial Home after a brief illness.
Jeanne was born on October 17, 1921 in Norwalk, Ohio to the late Edward and Alma (Grismer) Powers.
She graduated from the James E. Cole High School in 1939 as the Salutatorian. The school returned to being Norwalk High School the following year. Jeanne served in the military as a Sergeant in the U.S Army in Washington, D.C. during World War II. She then worked at Durkee Famous Foods until her marriage to Robert M. Hill on April 19, 1947. In later years, Jeanne was the supervisor of the bookkeeping department at the Huron County Bank for twenty-two years. She enjoyed her position at the bank and held deeply her friendships with her co-workers.
Jeanne was active in many local organizations. In the 1950s, she was a volunteer and champion for The March of Dimes and also worked on the development of the children's library on the lower floor of the Norwalk Public Library. After they retired, she and her husband Bob were volunteers for the Meals on Wheels program for 12 years.
Jeanne is survived by her three daughters, Diane Ratcliff of Arnold, Maryland; Gretchen (Jim) Gerken of Norwalk, Ohio; and Patricia Hill of Topanga, California. She is survived by four grandchildren and one granddaughter-in-law, Abigail Ratcliff of Arnold, Maryland; Miles Lewis of Topanga, California; James Gerken (Kristen Lipari) of New York City; and Samuel Gerken of Columbus, Ohio. She is also survived by her sister Mary (Kitch) Kitchens. She leaves behind many devoted nieces and nephews with whom she enjoyed emailing and visiting.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert, in 2013. She was also preceded in death by her siblings Robert Powers, Ruth Studer, Barbara Dunlap, and Patricia Stremlow.
There will be no visitation and a private family service will be held at a later date. Interment will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Norwalk.
