Owen John "Jack" "O.J." Gilmour, 81, residing in the Ohio Veterans Home, Sandusky, and formerly of Niles, OH, died Monday, November 7, 2016, at his residence.
He was born on January 17, 1935 in Niles, OH.
He served in the U.S. Navy for 4 years, as a engine mechanic for airplanes, on the USS Bennington and USS Randolph.
After the military and before the railroad Owen attended barber college on the G.I. Bill and became a barber. He operated his own shop for many years, before working for Conrail as a conductor, where he retired.
O.J. was a Cleveland Browns and Cleveland Indians fan, loved the Ohio State Buckeyes, life member of the V.F.W. and American Legion, an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting and fishing, he was fascinated with horses, liked riding his four wheeler, and most of all liked spending time with his grandchildren.
He is survived by his sons, Garth M. (Christina) Gilmour, Niles, OH, and Jeffrey D. (Christine) Gilmour, Newton Falls, OH; grandchildren, Nicole, Brooke, Anthony, Brighton, Brixton, and Bryson; five great-grandchildren; brothers, William Gilmour, Niles, OH, and Charles Gilmour, Lordstown, OH; and sister, Mary Baker, Howland, OH.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Fredrick and Elizabeth (Davis) Gilmour; and brothers, Benjamin Gilmour and Ronald Gilmour.
A graveside service will be held Monday, November 14, 2016, at 1 P.M. in Niles Union Cemetery, Niles, OH.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Ohio Veterans Home, 3416 Columbus Ave., Sandusky, OH 44870.
