David F. Pletcher Sr. 88, of Sandusky and most recently of Portland Place, passed away Sunday evening, December 4, 2016, following a brief illness. He is now with the Lord and his beloved wife Arvilla.
David was born November 1, 1928 in Toledo, Ohio, spending his childhood in Toledo, Marion, Mansfield, and Sandusky.
He served in the Navy during World War II, spending most of his time in the Pacific theater aboard the U.S.S. Fred T. Berry. Upon his departure from the Navy, David entered an apprenticeship program to become an electrician. He was a 68 year member of the IBEW, retiring in 1990.
David was a 62 year member of the Masonic Fraternity, joining in 1954 at Mahoning Lodge #394 Free & Accepted Masons of Niles, Ohio, and then transferred to Perseverance Lodge #329, F. & A.M., Sandusky, in 1969. He presided as the Worshipful Master in 1976, and later served as the Chaplain for many years. He was also a member & past High Priest of Sandusky City Chapter #72 Royal Arch Masons, a member & past Illustrious Master of Sandusky City Council #26 Royal & Select Masons, and a member & Past Commander of Erie Commandery #23 Knights Templar. David was a Knight of the York Cross of Honor, Ohio Priory #18, and a member of Singara Grotto MOVPER.
He and his wife Arvilla, who were members of St. Stephen United Church of Christ, always enjoyed greeting people as they entered the church on Sunday mornings. For many years, they supported the church by providing personalized baptism towels.
He and his wife were members of the original Dock Gang, later known as the Dock Friends. They could always be found on summer nights at the Jackson Street Pier, laughing and enjoying the company of their many friends. Their greatest joy however was spending time with each other and their extensive family.
David is survived by his three sons, David (Victoria) Pletcher, Jr., Carl (Rose) Pletcher both of Sandusky, and Michael Pletcher of Bradenton, Florida; nine grandchildren, Benjamin (Kara) Pletcher, Kari (Doug) Vance, Nicholas (Heather) Pletcher, Jennifer (Robert) Greene, Michael Pletcher, Jr., Stephanie Michelle Pletcher, Jenna Pletcher, Hilary Pletcher-Turner and Krystle Goosetree; 17 great grandchildren, Kailee, Emily, Alison, Ronin, Cameron, Taylor, Jesse, Autumn, Annis, Eli, Dylan, Zachary, Hannah, Emma, Trenton, Scarlet, and Dawson; one sister, Patti Muncey; nieces, nephews and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Arvilla M. (Ulmer) Pletcher, his parents, Chester and Eleanor (McGinley) Pletcher, three sisters, Francis Yoakam, Gladys (Pletcher) Stanley, and Mary (Yoakam) Hallier, and one brother, Raymond Pletcher.
Friends may call Thursday, December 8, 2016 in the Pfeil Funeral Home, Sandusky Chapel, 617 Columbus Avenue, Sandusky from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM, where Perseverance Lodge will hold a Masonic Memorial Service at 7:00 pm Thursday. Friends may also call Friday, December 9, 2016 from 9:00 AM until time of funeral service at 11:00 AM in the funeral home. The Rev. Jerald A. Fenske will officiate. Burial will be in the Meadow Green Memorial Park, Huron, with military honors.
