Barbara L. Smith, 88, of Sandusky, passed away early Friday morning, March 31, 2017 in Lutheran Memorial Home, Sandusky.
She was born February 7, 1929 in Montgomery, W. Va. to the late Thomas Nelson and Katie Oakley.
She married Isham Smith on January 30, 1945. She then moved to Sandusky in 1952.
She was employed at Lake Erie Canning, Cedar Point, and her pride and joy, EHCAC Head Start for 32 years, retiring in 1997. She helped to prepare over 12,000 meals that were served to hundreds of children. She loved and enjoyed working with kids.
Barbara was a devoted member of Providence Missionary Baptist Church, dating back to 1952. She was a part of the church's founding, along with Deacon Dave Aaron and Pastor J.A. Jordan. She continued to be a faithful member under the leadership of Pastors Eddie Brown, Samuel Mickles, and Dr. Scottie Aaron.
Barbara leaves to cherish her memory her son, Herbert L. (Annette) Smith Sr., of Sandusky; daughter, Dale (Reef) Young Jr., of Sandusky; brother, Raymond (Margaret) Oakley, of Chicago; grandchildren, Reef Young III and Herbert Smith Jr.; two great-grandsons, Xavier Lewis Smith and Yashmir Lewis Smith; great-nephew, Thomas Dickinson; Godchildren, Joe Nathan Keys, LaTonia Garrett, Tamara Moultrie, and Larry Keys; special friends, Betty Churchwell, Vietta Smith, Rosa Gowdy, Marion "Jim Dandy" Sheppard, and Ralph Shine; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Isham Smith; step-mother, Mary Lou Oakley; sister, Thomasina Jones; niece, Paulette Price; and daughter-in-law, Jacqueline Smith.
Friends may call from 10 a.m. on Friday, April 7 until time of funeral services at 12 Noon in Providence Missionary Baptist Church, Sandusky. Rev. Dr. Scottie Aaron will officiate. Burial will follow in Oakland Cemetery.
