Richard William Maag, 82, of Sandusky passed away Tuesday, April 11, 2017 in the Firelands Regional Medical Center, Sandusky following a brief illness. Richard was born April 1, 1935 in Sandusky and was a 1953 graduate of Sandusky High School.
He was employed for 42 years at the Thakar Aluminum Corporation (formerly known as Vulcan Materials), retiring in 2000. Prior to this, he worked on the Great Lakes as an employee of Cleveland Cliffs. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and an 80-year member of the former Salem United Methodist Church. Richard was a Paul Harris Fellow, a member of Rockwell Springs Trout Club and the Maritime Museum of Sandusky. He was also a member of Science Lodge No. 50, F.&A.M., Sandusky City Chapter No. 72, R.A.M., Sandusky City Council No. 26, R.&S.M., Erie Commandery No. 23, K.T., 32 Degree Mason, Scottish Rite, Valley of Toledo & Firelands, the Philalethes Society, the Quatuor Coronati Lodge No. 2076, and a former member of Eleanor Chapter No. 331, O.E.S., and the International Order of Job's Daughters, Bethel No. 18., where he served as Guardian.
His hobbies included golf, clock restoration and volunteering at the Sandusky Green House, and he enjoyed model trains, photography, boating, ice boating and bee keeping. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, the former Jane Smith; two daughters, Kristen Willis of West Chester, OH and Jennifer Maag of Indianapolis, IN; two grandchildren, Richard A. Willis and Kathryn Willis, both of West Chester, OH; one sister, Virginia Neuman of Sandusky; one brother in law, Alan (Joyce) Smith of Loveland, OH; one sister in law, Beverly Smith of Wauseon, OH; nieces, nephews and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents, Oliver and Janet (Sharpe) Maag and a brother in law, Dan Smith.
Science Lodge will hold a Masonic Memorial Services at 10:30 AM, Monday, April 17, 2017 in the Trinity United Methodist Church, 214 East Jefferson Street, Sandusky. Funeral services will immediately follow. The Rev. Douglas Winner will officiate. Committal services for the family will be held in the Oakland Cemetery, Sandusky. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Trinity United Methodist Church, the Science Lodge No. 50, 304 Wayne Street, Sandusky, Ohio 44870 or to the Sandusky Masonic Temple Building Fund, 304 Wayne Street, Sandusky.
