Annie Mae Card, 94, of Sandusky, peacefully transitioned to her heavenly home in the early morning hours of Monday, April 19, 2017, surrounded by the prayers of her family.
She was born in St. Claire, AL on May 10, 1922 to Delia Nunn-Wright and Wilson Alexander, and was one of fifteen children, including Elnora, Lenora, Pearlie, Bessie, Anna, Roselia, David, Sam, Mack, Joseph, Willie, George, Jodi, and Tomi. Both of her parents instilled Christ, compassion, and love into Annie at a very early age. These lessons never left her.
Mother Card decided to move north for more opportunities and lived in Cleveland for a short amount of time with her sister, Elnora. She then relocated to Sandusky where she was employed with Decko Products and retired after several years of employment. Sandusky was also the place where she met and fell in love with her late husband, Deannie "Dennis" Card. The two of them truly loved each other and that love was displayed daily through their amazing relationship with one another. They were married on April 13, 1963.
Annie and Dennis did not have any biological children but loved and raised their nephew, Charles Alexander, as if he was their own. Annie was also blessed with a best friend and sister, the late Mother Emma J. Baxley. Both Annie and Dennis proudly stepped into a Godly role in the lives of Emma's six girls from birth. The two, throughout the years, have stood before God and gladly accepted the role of Godparents to 10 children, whom they lovingly referred to as "their kids".
With a servant's heart she loved to entertain family and friends in her home, making sure that each one felt as though they were the most important person in the room. Annie loved the Lord and knew him to be her Lord and Savior. She was a member of New Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church and devotedly served as an usher for over 50 years. She loved fashion and was known for her elegant dresses and suits. She always graced us with a beautiful, one-of-a-kind statement-piece hats with jewelry to match.
She spent her last precious years being watched over by Viola McKinney while still residing in her home in Sandusky. She then relocated to Maple Heights, OH with nephew, Arthur, his wife, Estella Johnson, and beloved niece, Sabrina Johnson. Mother Card's last months were spent with her nephew, Jerry, and his wife, Pamela Alexander. She was truly loved and adored by all.
Mother Card leaves to celebrate her life her only living sibling, Roselia Morrell, of Montgomery, AL; nephew, Charles Alexander; along with nephews, Arthur "Junebug" Johnson, Jr. (Estella), of Maple Hts., OH, Jerry Alexander (Pamela), of Cleveland, OH, Peter Johnson (Elaine), of Verbena, AL, Tyrone Gibson (Roberta), of Cleveland, OH, Justin Vereen, of Atlanta, GA, Markie Alexander, of Warren, OH; nieces, Sabrina Johnson, of Maple Hts., OH, Gwendolyn Bryant (Charles), of Cleveland, OH, Beverly Gibson (and her daughters, Hazel and Kiara Evans), of Cleveland, OH, Shelia Parker (Michael), of Minneapolis, MN; cousins, JC McCall (Barbara), of Marblehead, OH, Otis McCall, of Cleveland, OH, sister-in-law, Irene Alexander, of Warren, OH; special friends, Clyde Keel, Mr. and Mrs. Ben Monroe, Mary Morris, Ann Murphy, and Eli and Undraye Hunley. Her memories will also be cherished by her Godchildren, Phyllis Brantley, Emmico McCarty, Sherma Shoemo, Travis Cooper and Trina Henlon, Mary Denise Warren, Dennis Norris, James Murphy Jr., Jason and Zion Henlon; along with a host of relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Deannie Card; parents, Delia Nunn-Wright and Wilson Alexander; her aforementioned siblings; and her best friend and sister, Mother Emma J. Baxley.
Family and Friends will gather on Friday, April 28, 2017 at New Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church, 1920 Eddie Henry Way, Sandusky, for visitation from 10 a.m. until the funeral service begins at 11 a.m. with Rev. Curtis L. Johnson Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in Meadow Green Memorial Park, Huron, OH.
