Bernard Lynn Palmer

Bernard Lynn Palmer, 93, of Sandusky, passed away on Friday, April 28, 2017 in Genacross Lutheran Home (formerly Lutheran Memorial Home) with his sister by his side.

Bernard was born in Sandusky on November 23, 1923. He was the oldest child of Bernard M. Palmer and Ada Lutes Palmer.

Bernard was a graduate of Heidelberg College and received a Masters of Education Degree from the University of Toledo in Guidance and Counseling. He was also awarded a PS.D. from the state chartered College of Metaphysics in Indiana. Through his 27-year career at Perkins Schools, Palmer was a teacher, principal, counselor as well as Director of Pupil-Personnel Services. He was always advocating for his students' success. After retirement, Palmer tutored adolescents in the Chemical Dependency Program at Firelands Hospital as well as working part-time as a counselor/tester for Erie County Juvenile Court.

Bernard was active for many years as an Elder and ordained Deacon at First Presbyterian Church in Sandusky. He had been praised in his school and community work by the late Dorothy Fuldheim of Cleveland TV fame.

Palmer served on the Erie County Mental Health Board, the previous 648 MRDD Board, and the Oakland Cemetery and YMCA Boards. He also served as an advisor in the early development of EHOVE, Firelands College, and Terra Technical College as well as a member of the Advisory Council of the University of Toledo and SAHEC of the Ohio Medical College in Toledo. Bernard spent his lifetime giving time to his community; was there for many relatives and sent many thoughtful, encouraging notes, many a gold star, many a stick of gum-often asking, "What can I do for you?"

Bernard is survived by his sister, June Johnson, who has been his care-taker for several years until it was necessary to move him to Genacross Lutheran Home. He is also survived by a brother in Texas, Dr. Landon (Nellie) Palmer; and nieces and nephews around the country.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, William; sister, Ruth Hunker; and nephew, Chris Johnson.

A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church in Sandusky on Wednesday, May 10 at 11 a.m. Dr. Robert Smith will officiate. All are welcome and encouraged to celebrate his life and many accomplishments. There will be luncheon immediately following. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Toft Funeral Home & Crematory, 2001 Columbus Ave., Sandusky.

There is much gratitude for the staff at Genacross Lutheran Home as well as Ohio Living Hospice. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to them in Bernard's name.
