Garnet Wright Mauk

Garnet Wright Mauk, 91, Sandusky passed away peacefully early Friday morning, June 16, 2017, at Admiral"s Point Nursing Home, Huron ,after struggling many years with Alzheimers.

Garnet was born October 2, 1925 in Paintsville, Kentucky. She moved to Southern Ohio (Portsmouth area) with her parents, Ezra and Hattie Wright, and her siblings in the 1930s.

During the depression she and her two older sisters worked in Baltimore, MD and then in Sandusky to help support her younger siblings. After her marriage in 1945, she moved to Sandusky to raise her three children, Dianna, Doug, and Deborah.

Garnet was very proud of her efforts along with her sisters, Dovie and Norma, to purchase a house for her mother and younger siblings. Known as the Sandusky trio, the three sisters worked at the Plum Brook TNT plant during World War II and enjoyed an independent life during times that were tumultuous.

After marriage Garnet worked 32 years at New Departure as well as a part-time real estate agent. She retired to Mesa, AZ where she lived 22 years. She loved working odd jobs to keep herself busy and to meet new people. She then returned to Sandusky to be near her daughters during her medical decline. She loved reading and quilting and spent many hours creating baby quilts for each of her grandchildren and using scraps of treasured materials to create special items.

Garnet married John L. Mauk and had three children. She was very proud that all three graduated from Perkins Local Schools and all were the first in the family to complete post-secondary degrees. She always felt education was extremely important.

She is survived by her daughters, Dianna (Richard) Acierto and Deborah Kennedy; grandchildren, Dawn (Jim) Zappa, Drew Acierto, Dustin (Kristi) Villareal, Dallas Cawley, Dezerae (Cote) Stahl, and Camille Karren; eight great grandchildren; and siblings, Juanita (Gene) Fresch and John (Elaine) Wright.

Garnet was preceded in death by her son, John Douglas Mauk; parents, Ezra Wright and Hattie Butchett Wright; her sibling, William (Bud) Wright, Dovie Sauer, Norma Smith, Ezra Wright Jr., and Wade Wright; and her former husband, John L. Mauk.

Cremation has taken place and friends may call on Saturday, July 8, 2017, from 10 A.M. until time of memorial services at 11 A.M. in Toft Funeral Home & Crematory, 2001 Columbus Ave., Sandusky.
