Fred “Carp” Vance, 83, Sandusky, passed away Saturday, August 13, 2011, in St. Vincent’s Mercy Medical Center, Toledo.
He was born on January 13, 1928 in Sandusky, OH.
He was employed by the former Vulcan Materials for 35 years, and also worked at Walmart as a door greeter for 17 years.
Fred was a U.S. Army veteran, serving with the Tuskegee Airmen during WWII.
He was a member of the American Legion Post 83, Sandusky, and the V.F.W. Post 2529, Sandusky. Fred loved listening to music, playing cards, fishing, sports, traveling, and most of all, spending time with his family.
Fred is survived by his wife of 25 years, Sheila (Jones) Vance; children, Fred (Mary) Vance, Valerie Vance, Ronald (Phyllis) Vance, Greg (Gladys) Vance, Tyrone Vance, Lisa (Scottie) Cunningham, and Sonya (Shajuan) Squires; seventeen grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; sisters, JoAnn (Cliff) Meyers and Tina Meyers; brothers, Laffee Vance, David (Debbie) Vance, Jimmy (Ann) Vance, and Donald (Dannie) Vance; several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Frederick and Gertrude (Reed) Vance; sisters, Betty Gant, Stella Green, and Edith Ellington.
The family would like to give a special thanks to his caregivers, Carla Jones, Carl Jones, Jasmine (Jones) Miller, Jack Jones, Jackie Martinez, and Michelle Greenwood.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, August 20, 2011, at 11 A.M. in Toft Funeral Home & Crematory, 2001 Columbus Ave., Sandusky. A private burial will take place in Oakland Cemetery. Condolences may be shared at www.toftfh.com.
