Russell Earl Layton

Russell Earl Layton, 74, residing in Sandusky, died unexpectedly Monday afternoon, November 20, 2017 at Firelands Regional Medical Center.

Russell was born on February 27, 1943 in Fulton County, PA to the late Albert "Bud" E. Layton and Susan Anna Lee (Eader) Hinkle.

Russell was a security officer for NASA for 4 years, a police officer for the city of Sandusky for 9 years and most recently had been a security officer at General Motors for 30 years before retiring in 2006. He was a lifetime member of VFW Post 2529 and a member of the AMVETS Post 17. In his spare time, he enjoyed visiting with his friends every morning at the Donut House, Jolly Donut and spending time with his family. He was also intrigued by Civil War history and visited Gettysburg many times.

Russell is survived by his wife of 50 years, Linda (Kastor) Layton. He is also survived by his four daughters, Kimberly (Kevin) Brown, Kristine (Phelix) Vanzant, Kerry (Clint Trumpower) Hayberger and Kelly (Andrew) Aceto; grandchildren, Phylicia, Kayla, Kodie, Madison, Zacchary, Dominic, Trevor, Hannah and Abigail; great-grandchildren, Nevaeh, Sophia and Benjamin; fur babies, Whiskers and Little Bit; numerous friends, nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

Friends may call on Friday, November 24, 2017 from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Groff Funeral Homes & Crematory, 1607 E Perkins Ave, Sandusky. Friends may also visit in the funeral home at 9:30am on Saturday, November 25, 2017 until the time of funeral services at 10:30 am. Pastor Jim Michaels will officiate. Burial will follow in Meadow Green Memorial Park, Huron.
