Charles W. Sams, Jr.

Charles W. Sams, Jr., 83, of Huron, passed away in the Ohio Veterans Home on Friday evening, December 1, 2017.

He was born on October 12, 1934 in Liberty, Missouri. Charles moved to Sandusky at an early age, where he eventually met and married his wife, Sandra Manning, on October 9, 1956.

Charles enlisted in the United States Army at the age of 17, and served in the Korean War. He was retired from Tenneco and BGSU Police Department. Charles was also one of the first Sandusky Police Reserve Officers and served on the department for 18 years.

He was an avid fan of old westerns, loved to read, and enjoyed traveling. He was always joking with his grandchildren and loved to make people laugh.

Charles is survived by his daughter, Susan (Don) Brown, of Sandusky; son, Charles (Rita) Sams, of Huron; his companion, Irma Franklin, of Norwalk; siblings, Frank (Dorothy) Sams, of Collins, John (Gerry) Sams, of Mt. Gilead, Gary (Donna) Sams, of Norwalk, Charlene Gilliam, of Castalia, Glenna Mullins, of Sandusky, and Rita (Thomas) Wechter, of Norwalk; grandchildren, Daniel (Cindy) Sams, Melissa (Matt) Hollada, Ryan (Katy) Goretzki, Anthony, Tyler, and William Sams, James Brown, and Daniel (Beth) Brown; great-grandchildren, Ashley, Michael, Seth, Shelby, Savannah, Addy, Mila, Cheyenne, Tyler, Alexia, and Aubrey; great-great-grandson, Brayson; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Sandra (Manning) Sams; parents, Charles and Alpha Sams; brothers, Earl and Louis Sams; and sisters, Alpha Johns and Mickey Stout.

A special thank you to the staffs at the Ohio Veterans Home and Stein Hospice for their loving care and support.

Visitation will be Tuesday, December 5 from 4-6 p.m. in Toft Funeral Home & Crematory, 2001 Columbus Ave., Sandusky. Funeral services will begin at 6 p.m. with Rev. Ken Hiser officiating. Charles will be laid to rest during a private committal service in Meadow Green Memorial Park, Huron.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Charles' name to the Salvation Army of Sandusky, 3333 Columbus Ave., Sandusky, OH 44870.
