Robert "Red" King

Robert “Red” King, 82, Monroeville, crossed over peacefully in Stein Hospice Care Center on Monday, August 29, 2011.

 

He was born in Memphis, Tennessee on April 29, 1929 to Jack and Billie (Flowers) King.

 

At a young age Red worked on Mississippi River boats until he joined the Merchant Marines.  He then joined the Army with his unit, The Big Red One.  He was wounded in Normandy and received a Purple Heart and numerous medals – Army Good Conduct, Europe, Africa, Middle East with two stars.  During his time in the service, he attended Q.M. school to become a salvage technician.

 

Red retired from New Departure Hyatt as a millwright after 30 years.  After retiring, he moved to Biloxi, MS where he captained a jack-up-barge.  He also spent ten years living on a boat in Punta Gorda, FL, where he spent time deep sea diving and salvaging.

 

He was a member of the former Sandusky Moose Lodge, American Legion Post 83, Sandusky, and Sandusky Eagles #444.

 

Red is survived by his wife of 31 years, Barbara (Behrens) King; son, Robert M. (Karla ) King, Biloxi, MS; son-in-law, Timothy Roth, Huron; stepsons, David B.(Sherrie) Barbour, Monroeville, OH, and Kevin S. (Wendy) Barbour, Red Bluff, CA; five grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Robert (Connie) Behrens, Perkins Twp.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Billie Rose and Mary Lou Davis; and brother, Jack King, Jr.
