Paul Leo Hevner, Sr.

Paul Leo Hevner, Sr., 97, of Sandusky, passed away Sunday evening, December 17, 2017 in the Ohio Veterans Home, where he resided.

He was born on January 17, 1920 in Emoryville, WV to the late Andrew H. and Lillian (Murphy) Hevner.

Paul enlisted in the military in May of 1944 and trained at Fort McClellan near Anniston, Alabama. He served in with Company B, 25th Battalion Army 4th Infantry as a M1 Rifleman. He was in the Battle of the Bulge. He returned home in 1946 through Fort Meade, Maryland, and was awarded the good conduct medal, Bronze Star, Sharp Shooter medal, and several ribbons. He was extremely proud to have served his country.

Paul is survived by his children, Paul Eugene Hevner, Paul L. Hevner, Jr., Kay L. (Hevner) Smith, Richard Barnes, and Nancy (Barnes) King; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and other relatives.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Edith, in 2006; and sons, Alan Hevner and Clarence E. "Budd" Barnes.

Per Paul's request, cremation will take place and private services will be held in Meadow Green Memorial Park, Huron. Pastor Wally Gilbert will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Paul's name to the Ohio Veterans Home Resident Benefit Fund, 3416 Columbus Ave., Sandusky, OH 44870. Toft Funeral Home & Crematory, 2001 Columbus Ave., Sandusky, is handling arrangements.
