Raymond J. Schaefer, 85, of Sandusky, passed away Friday evening, Aug 20, 2010 at the Stein Hospice Care Center following a brief illness.

He was born Jan 9, 1925 in Sandusky to the late Ethel Gertrude (Owen) and Anthony H. Schaefer. Mr. Schaefer was a 1942 graduate of Sandusky High School and had attended Purdue University. He was an US Navy Veteran and served his country during WWII in the Pacific submarine division. Mr. Schaefer was a member of St. Mary�s Catholic Church, Sandusky. He was a life member of the Sandusky Elks Lodge and the Sandusky American Legion. He enjoyed his fishing trips in Canada and walking on the beach with his wife while wintering in Florida. He was a third generation contractor, beginning in the mid 1940's with his father's company, Schaefer Contractors. In 1950 he founded his own general contracting company, Raymond J. Schaefer, Inc. It continues in Sandusky today with two additional generations following in his footsteps. He was a partner in RABL, Inc. and Medical Arts and was co-owner of the Casino Bar on Kelley's Island. He was a partner of Craftlease, a group of regional beverage centers. He was one of the developers of Leisure Estates, Lake Wilmer Condominiums and Lake Wilmer Medical Center.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years: Jeanne (Harple) Schaefer, sons: Gary Schaefer & Anthony Schaefer, III; grandchildren: Derek, Kelley, Gary Jr., Steve, Leslie, Tracy, Anthony IV and Raymond; and 14 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, son: Raymond in 1973; brothers: Richard & Owen; and sister: Bernita.

Private Family Services will be conducted.
