Benjamin Monroe

Benjamin Monroe, 90, of Marblehead, was called home from this life on Sunday, January 21, 2018 in Admiral's Pointe, Huron.

He was born on May 20, 1927 in Raleigh, NC to the late Robert and Willor (McClain) Monroe.

Ben was the seventh child of twelve. He accepted Christ at an early age and graduated from high school in Raleigh and enlisted in the U.S. Navy, and was honorable discharged in 1945.

After four years of service to our country, Ben relocated to Cleveland, OH, and graduated from Cleveland Cuyahoga Community College with a degree in Plumbing and Electrical Engineering. He worked 39 years for Republic Steel/LTV.

During his later years of work he met and married Ruby Clay. They relocated from Cleveland to Marblehead in 1987. They joined Gypsum Tabernacle Church of God in Christ under the leadership of the late Pastor Harold Boggs, and then New Jerusalem Baptist Church, where Ben sang in the male chorus and served on the Deacon Board and help with other church activities.

Benjamin was never at a loss for words, he had a gift for saying funny things and keep you laughing at his jokes. Ben and Ruby loved to travel, traveling the country in their motor home driving to Los Angeles more than once, New Orleans, Mississippi, and most of the southern states. They were affectionately nicknamed the two Gypsies.

He leaves to mourn his passing, wife of 39 ½ years, Ruby; sister, Pastor Lois Burnette, Durham, NC; from a previous marriage, daughter, Bernice Gibbs, NC; sons, Pastor Carlton Monroe, CA, Mark (Sherrie) Monroe, FL, and James (Rasalon) Monroe, Cleveland, OH; host of loving grandchildren, great-grandchildren, a great-great-grandchild; nieces, nephews, cousins, many friends, and his church family.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a son, Reginald Monroe.

Friends may call on Tuesday, January 30, 2018, from 10 A.M. until time of funeral services at 11 A.M. in New Jerusalem Baptist Church, 1920 Eddie Henry Way, Sandusky. Rev. Curtis L. Johnson Jr. will officiate. Burial will be in Christy Chapel Cemetery, Portage Township.
