Gerald G. "Jerry" Rasmussen, 91, began his next journey on January 27, 2018.
He was born March 3, 1926 in Calamus, Iowa. He was a member of "Hell's Angels" 303rd Bomb Group, 8th Air Force, flying 14 missions over Germany and occupied territories as a ball turret gunner during WWII. After the war, he reenlisted and returned to Europe as part of the occupation army.
Jerry was a District Supervisor for Imperial Oil Co. for many years. He was also employed by Sandusky City Schools in building maintenance and was boiler operator at Sandusky High School until he retired. Retirement didn't mean much to him. He worked winters at Disney World in Florida as captain on a 100-passenger boat for 14 years, and spent his summers operating his concession trailer "Captain Jerry's Funnel Cakes" in Sandusky.
He was a member of the Masons and Singara Grotto and spent many years as a member of the United States Coast Guard auxiliary.
It was during this time he married the love of his life Darline Cotton. They went on to have four children and lived in Iowa until 1969 when they moved for a short time to Sandusky before finding their "perfect" home on Catawba Island.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Rasmus Rasmussen and Ethel (Johnson) Rasmussen Paylor; and sisters Doris Wiese, Charlotte Pape Durnell, and Virginia Rasmussen.
He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Darline (Cotton) Rasmussen of Port Clinton; children, Linda Rasmussen Nieman of Toledo Ohio, Steven Rasmussen of Castalia, Ohio, Ronald and Terry Rasmussen of Casper Wyoming, and Jeffrey and Sherry Rasmussen of Boca Raton, Florida; grandchildren, Ryan Rasmussen of Chicago, Ilinois, Jessica and Anthony Ferguson of Casper, Wyoming, Corrine Bruning of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and William Bruning of Alaska; great grandsons Riley and Isaiah of Casper, Wyoming; sister Darlene Hurtch of Rock Ledge, Florida; loved ones Kevin and Ruth Marsh of Clinton, Iowa; and numerous, nieces, and nephews.
There will be no memorial services.
