Carl W. "Cookie" Gysan

Carl W. "Cookie" Gysan, 87, of Sandusky passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 20, 2018 in Toledo, Ohio.

He was born September 4, 1930 in Castalia to August and Anna (Bruckner) Gysan.

Carl was a 1948 graduate of Margaretta High School. He had worked for the Elmer Borchardt, Inc. for five years and the Castalia Trout Farms for twenty-five years. Carl also drove bus for both Margaretta and Sandusky City Schools where he retired after twenty-eight years of service. He was awarded Staff Member of the Year in 1993 from Sandusky City Schools for his excellence. He loved transporting the "Blue Streaks" to sporting and club events.

Carl enjoyed spending time with friends and family and was a loving father, uncle, brother, and dear friend. He also loved dogs, whom were his companions in later years. Cookie will be remembered for his friendly and outgoing personality, talking with and making friends wherever he went. He enjoyed playing dartball with friends and family for over fifty years where he loved to manage his teams. He played at Grace Lutheran Church in Castalia, St. John's Lutheran Church in Fremont, and Zion Lutheran Church in Sandusky. He also enjoyed watching and coaching sports.

He is survived by his sons, Gary Gysan of Toledo, Ohio, Stephen (Judy) Gysan of Reynoldsburg, Ohio, and Mark Gysan of Toledo, Ohio; his daughter, Rebecca Gysan of Toledo, Ohio; two step-daughters, Sarah Benke and Mary Sartor; three grandchildren, Elizabeth, Jennifer, and Michael; two great grandchildren; step grandchildren, and step great grandchildren; one sister, Dorothy (Curtis) Miller; many nieces, nephews and friends.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Geraldine Gysan, mother of his children, Gladine Gysan; infant son, James Gysan; grandson, Shane Cataline; brothers, August, Robert, Walter, Richard, and Howard Gysan; and sister, Ruth Weisz.

The family would like to extent their sincere appreciation to the staff of Ohioans Home of Healthcare and to Visiting Angels of Toledo for their wonderful care and support.

Friends may call Saturday, February 24, 2018 from 9:00 AM until time of funeral service at 10:00 AM at the Zion Lutheran Church, 503 Columbus Avenue, Sandusky. The Rev. Dr. Eric Bodenstab will officiate. Entombment will follow in the Castalia Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Zion Lutheran Church or to the donor's favorite charity.
