Our beloved mother, Lois (Phelps) Carver, 87, Sandusky, left her earthly life behind at 3:18 P.M. on Thursday afternoon, September 8, 2011. All of us, her loving children, cared for Mom at her home since her hospitalization in July, and we were with her at her passing.
She was born on April 3, 1924 in Elyria, Ohio.
Mom graduated from Elyria High School where she was a member of the TiAlo sorority. She attended the music school at Baldwin Wallace College for one year where she met our Dad, the late William Carver. They married soon after and were married for 62 years. While Dad finished college, Mom worked for the J.C. Penney Co. during World War II, and later for Ohio Bell.
After the birth of their second child, Mom chose to become a homemaker and devoted herself to raising us eight children with love and care: Peggy (Chris) Weaver, who passed away in 2006, Patricia Callan (William Routsong), Jon (Lisa) Carver, Jan (Lou) Young, Molly Carver (Paul Coleman), Kelly (Hank) Boissoneault, Cam (Carol) Carver, and Meg (Larry) Nester. Mom loved and enjoyed her twelve grandchildren: Steve Miller, Aimee (Jimmy) Steele, Jason (Ashley) Callan, Erin and Camille Carver, Katie, Lizzie, and Will Boissoneault, Logan and Casey Carver, Alex and Larry Nestor, and her four great-grandchildren: Jacob Miller, Michael Steele, Tony Guevara, and Jaelynn Callan.
Mom practiced her belief that it is truly better to give than receive. She volunteered for Girl Scouts of America, the ECHO Crisis Line, where she also served on the Board of Directors, The Salvation Army, Clothe-a-Child, and Help Mates. Mom taught adults to read at the Sandusky Public Library, and later worked in their children's department. She especially enjoyed her last job working for Dr. Ronald Brooks.
During her child-rearing years, Mom was a member of the Better Mothers Club and Mothers of Twins Club. She also participated in The Friendly U group with neighborhood friends. Mom loved music, played the piano, was an avid reader, and enjoyed crocheting and sewing.
In celebration of Mom's long and loving live, her friends and neighbors are invited to join us for services on Friday, September 16, 2011 at 11 AM at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 2211 Mills Street, Sandusky. A luncheon will follow at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to The Carver Family Scholarship Fund, c/o Sandusky Erie County Community Foundation, 135 E. Washington Row, Sandusky, OH, 44870, to continue our family's commitment to award two
$ 1,000 scholarships annually to Sandusky High School graduates, or to Stein Hospice Service, 1200 Sycamore Line, Sandusky, OH, 44870, in recognition and appreciation of the compassion and support they provided Mom and our family. Toft Funeral Home & Crematory, 2001 Columbus Ave., Sandusky, is assisting with arrangements. Condolences may be shared at www.toftfh.com.
