John F. Windnagle, 84, residing in the Ohio Veterans Home and formerly of Defiance, passed away on his birthday, late Thursday, April 5, 2018 in Firelands Regional Medical Center.

He was born on April 5, 1934 in Sandusky to the late Ernest Paradis Windnagle and Helen (Lamb) Windnagle.

He graduated from St. Mary's High School. John was a teacher, coach, guidance counselor, and charter captain of his boat, Wendy's Way (on the side).

He was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War.

John built Holgate football stadium. In fact, he built Holgate football. He started the football programs at both Holgate and Lakota High Schools. He coached wherever he was needed, refereed, and drove school bus. Whatever needed to be done, John was there to do it! He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He farmed 156 acres in Willard, raising cattle and pigs. With his young family, John visited 44 of 50 states, traveling 1-2 months every summer. He had a special love for the American Southwest, and graduated with his Master's Degree from Western New Mexico University.

John is survived by his daughter, Jo Lynn Seibel, of Ellicott City, MD; son, James (Ginger) Windnagle, of Maumee, OH; grandchildren, Jordyn (Matt Goatley) Windnagle, Dakota Windnagle, Alex Seibel, and Nick Seibel; great-grandchild, Harley Goatley; brothers, Robert Windnagle and Walter Windnagle; sister, Martha (Frank) Vacarro; sister-in-law, Margaret Windnagle; and many nieces and nephews, relatives, and friends.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce E. Windnagle; brother, Ernest; and sister, Marilyn.

It was John's wish to be cremated. Friends may call on Sunday, April 8, 2018 from 1 p.m. until time of memorial services at 2 p.m. in Toft Funeral Home & Crematory, 2001 Columbus Ave., Sandusky. Rev. Joe Steinbauer will officiate.
