Bernard E. Smith

Bernard E. Smith, 88, of Norwalk, Ohio, passed away Wednesday, June 6, 2018 in the Stein Hospice Care Center, Sandusky, Ohio.

He was born January 27, 1930 in Red Jacket, West Virginia, to the late Freelian R. and Pearl E. (Neal) Smith, and came to this area in 1950 from Matewan, West Virginia.

Bernard was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of Trinity Temple, Milan, Ohio, and Firelands Post #2743 Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was past president of the Teener League baseball team, during the 1970's. He retired from Ford Motor Company of Sandusky, Ohio, as the UAW Health and Safety representative, in 1998, with 42 years of service.

Bernard enjoyed fishing, boating, coaching baseball, music and singing, and will always be remembered for his infectious laugh and sense of humor. He had a kindred soul, and found special time for his family, and grandchildren, and often wrote poetry for them. Compassion and love were valuable attributes that he taught his family.

Bernard often would buy a meal for someone at the next table, or would find generosity in his heart for someone in need. He was quoted often with "Know what you know.", he also quoted " C'est Si Bon", meaning, It's all good.

He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 18 years, Martha J. (Willeman) Smith of Norwalk, Ohio, by his children, Carlyle E. (Dawn) Smith of Norwalk, Ohio, Janis A. (Dale) Perkins of Norwalk, Ohio, John A. (Tina) Smith of Monroeville, Ohio, and Cynthia E. (William) Allen of Monroeville, Ohio, by his step children, Mark W. (Carol) Dopp of Wauseon, Ohio, Jeffery L. Dopp of Michigan, Kimberly Ann Dopp of Wauseon, Ohio, and Gayle L. Dopp of West Virginia.

Bernard is also survived by his grandchildren, Jeffrey Smith, Janette Smith, Scott Summerlin, Holley Kurtycz, Jerod Smith, Brandon Smith, Joshua Smith, Megan Elmlinger, Nathan D. Schaffer, Kyle M. Schaffer, Garren W. Schaffer, and Nicole A. Schafer, by 8 step grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren, several step great grandchildren, by his brother, Carlyle Smith of Port Clinton, Ohio, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Charles and Bill , by his sisters, Ruth, Margaret, and Roberta, and by his great granddaughter.

Friends may call on Friday, June 8, 2018, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Walker Funeral Home, 98 West Main Street, Norwalk, Ohio, where funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 9, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. Pastor Donald New of Trinity Temple, will officiate. Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery.
