Norma L. [Kunkel] Vaughn, 85, left this earth to live forever with the Lord on June 27th 2018.
She was born August 17th in 1932, the only child of the late Vertis Thomas Kunkel and Margaret Caroline Seybold-Kunkel.
She graduated from Mansfield Senior High School in 1949 and began working in the accounting department at Ohio Brass. She then met her future husband, Robert W. Vaughn, while vacationing at Lake Erie. She died just shy of her 65th wedding anniversary. Mrs. Vaughn was also a graduate of Sandusky School of Nursing and the School of Scribes, Calligraphers and Illuminators, London, England. Norma was the night shift ER charge nurse at Providence Hospital for many years then went on to work for Dr. John Cook, MD at Sandusky OB-GYN until her retirement.
She was an accomplished pianist, organist, gourmet cook and professional artist. Her watercolors toured museums nationally.
Mrs. Vaughn was a 58 year member of the Order of Eastern Stars in Huron, Ohio and Fort Meade, Florida. She was also a Red Cross Volunteer and a Heart of Ohio Emmaus member.
Norma is survived by Her husband, Robert, her son, Retired U.S. Army Major James E. [Diana] Vaughn, a daughter, Jan [Mark] Bohne, three grandchildren Eric [Lindsay Vaughan] Vaughn, Julie [USCG Commander Tad] Drozdowski and Matthew [Erin] Bohne.
In addition she had five great-grandchildren, Claire and Lauren Vaughn, Brooke and Addison Drozdowski and Isaac Bohne.
There will be no funeral service as Mrs. Vaughn did not believe in praying over a soul that was already in heaven.
Since Norma loved having parties, a celebration of her life was held while she was still living because as she put it, "It would kill me if everyone came to celebrate my life, after I was dead, and I could not attend." "But Mom you would already be dead." Laughing she responded, "I know that! But it would just kill me to not be able to go."
Mrs. Vaughn fell at home on May 5th resulting in a severe head and leg injury. In addition to other ongoing and critical medical issues, she was not able to recover.
The family would like to express their thanks to Providence Care Center for their efforts at rehabilitation and their unending patience in the face of adversity. We are also profoundly grateful to the kindness and compassion of Stein Hospice, at the end of her life, for a pain free and peaceful passing.
Donations in Norma's honor would be welcomed at Memorial Donations for Stein Hospice, 1200 Sycamore Line, Sandusky, OH 44870 or Calvin's Love: Bibles for Babies, P.O. Box 1212, Ashland, OH 44805.
