Mary E. Hickey

Mary E. Hickey, 97, of Norwalk, Ohio, passed away Thursday, August 9, 2018 in her home.

In 1920, EJ and Betty Mayle built a house in Norwalk, Ohio, That same year, their second daughter was born.
She was baptized, Mary Elizabeth, at St. Paul Catholic Church.

After attending St. Paul Schools for 12 years, she graduated from St. Paul High School in 1938, and was valedictorian of her class. Mary attended Saint Mary's College in South Bend, Indiana. She graduated Magna cum Laude June 6, 1942, with a major in Home Economics, and a minor in Chemistry. Her senior year she was the president of the Sodality of Mary, and the May Queen.

After graduation, she taught Chemistry at Saint Mary's College, and then moved briefly back to Norwalk. She returned to South Bend after she married Owen (Bud) Hickey from Chicago in 1943. She moved to Cleveland in 1944, then to Norwalk in 1959 corresponding with new job positions by her husband who worked for (NASA) at the Plum Brook Facility in Sandusky, Ohio. In 1963, Mary was asked to take a job as secretary at St. Paul High School. After 5 years, she was asked to move to a teaching position for the Home Economics class. She taught for 8 years. She not only taught the basics of cooking and sewing, but also how to shop and manage on a budget. Mary left St. Paul's in 1976 and went to work at Christie Lane, a school in Norwalk for developmentally and physically challenged children.

Mary was involved in the Infant Stim Program and was instrumental in developing the Respite Program for Huron County. She retired from Christie Lane in December 1985.

In 1979, Mary became very active in the revitalization of the St. Paul Alumni Association. She was the representative for the Class of 1938, and served as a trustee for several years. In her retirement years, she was active in the Home Economics Club, bridge club, knitting and baking. She enjoyed traveling, and being with her grandchildren.

For many years, she was a Eucharistic Minister, bringing communion to shut in parishioners, to patients at the hospital, and to the residents at the Carriage House. Mary served as a Sunday Greeter, and was a member of the Parish Prayer Chain.

Mary will always be a St. Paul Flyer!! Although she could not attend the games, she listened carefully to the radio whenever a game was broadcasted. Mary knew most of the players by name.

In 2016, Mary was inducted into the St. Paul High School Hall of Fame.

She is survived by her children, Thomas E. Hickey of Columbus, Ohio, Michael P. Hickey of Norwalk, Ohio, Owen L. Hickey of Columbus, Ohio, John J. Hickey of Flowery Branch, Georgia, and Mary Elizabeth "Betty" (George) Schlotterer of Centerville, Ohio, by 14 grandchildren, and 24 great grandchildren.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Owen T. "Bud" Hickey in 1975, by her brothers, Richard Mayle, and Frank "Bud" Mayle, and by her sister, Sister Mary Marilyn Mayle.

Friends may call on Sunday, August 12, 2018 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in Walker Funeral Home, 98 West Main Street, Norwalk, Ohio. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, August 13, 2018 at 1:30 p.m. in St. Paul Catholic Church, 91 East Main Street, Norwalk, Ohio. Msgr. Kenneth Morman will officiate. Interment will be in St. Paul Cemetery.
