Joseph J. Stein, 96, passed away on Sunday, September 23, 2018, in Twilight Gardens Home, Norwalk, Ohio.
He was born to the late Walter and Marie (Riley) Stein, on July 9, 1922, in Milan, Ohio.
He graduated from St. Paul Catholic High School in 1941 and was a lifelong area resident. Strong in his faith, Joe was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church, Norwalk, Ohio, and he also attended the Shrine of the Sorrowful Mother in Bellevue, Ohio. He was a founding member of St. Paul Federal Credit Union and volunteered much of his time to St. Vincent DePaul Society for over 60 years.
Joe worked for Maple City Ice and then Norwalk Truck Line for 15 years as a mechanic. He then started Stein's Nursery, Landscaping and Paving with his brother, Paul, and kept the business going until his retirement. He also enjoyed raising his own chickens and cattle; he was a philanthropist and did charitable work, giving to those in need.
Joe is survived by his brother, Donald R. Stein of Norwalk, Ohio, his sisters-in-law, Mary Alice (Paul) Stein, of Madeira Beach, Florida, and Kathleen (Robert) Stein, of Norwalk, Ohio, by his nephews, Jerry (Candy) Stein, Bellevue, Ohio, Charles (Wendy) Stein, of Norwalk, Ohio, Richard (Patty) Stein, of Norwalk, Ohio, Tom Stein, of Norwalk, Ohio, Bill (Bonnie) Stein, of Norwalk, Ohio, and Joseph R. (Amanda) Stein, of Columbus, Ohio.
He is also survived by his nieces, Diane (Raymond) Pereira, of Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, Connie (Tom) Merril, of Madeira Beach, Florida, Nancy (Mike) Newhouse, of Florida, Patty (Dan) Bergman, of Port Clinton, Ohio, Debbie Stein, of Las Vegas, Nevada, and Mary (Kim) Klinow, of Sandusky, Ohio.
Joe was preceded in death by his siblings, Paul Stein, Florence Stein, Robert Stein, an infant brother, by his sister-in-law, Bernice Stein, by his nieces, Kathy Saunders, and Donna and her husband Mike Yost, and by his nephew John Stein.
There will be no visitation. Mass of Christian Burial will be on Tuesday, September 25, 2018, at 10:30 a.m., in St. Paul Catholic Church, 91 E. Main St., Norwalk, Ohio 44857. Rev. Andrew Wellmann will officiate. Interment will be in St. Anthony Cemetery, Milan, Ohio.
