Herbert L. Smith, Sr., 71, of Sandusky, transitioned peacefully early October 1, 2018 at Heritage Village in Clyde, OH.
He was born September 25, 1947 in Montgomery, W. Va. to Barbara Lee (Oakley) Smith and Isham Smith.
Herb was an athlete. He brought home the first football championship in 1965 and graduated in 1966 from East Bank High School. He continued his education at West Virginia Tech for a year.
In 1967 Herbert enlisted into the U.S. Army. After the military he was self-employed, laying carpet for over 40 years. In addition, Herbert drove trucks from 2004-2009 and worked for MCS, SWIFT, Goodwill, and Eastern Star trucking companies. He retired in 2009.
In his spare time he enjoyed his family, watching sports, one of his favorite television shows was "Family Matters," The History Channel, and he certainly enjoyed good eating. He was a member of Mount Zion C.O.G.I.C. and he enjoyed the Mount Zion choir.
Herbert is survived by his devoted wife, Annette (Hunter) Smith; sister, Dale (Reef) Young, of Sandusky; son, Herbert Smith, Jr., of Trenton, New Jersey; children, Stephen (Aracely) Hunter, of Vista, California, Quinton Hunter, of Sandusky, Sandria Hunter, of Sandusky, and Dwaun (Jordan) Hunter, of Sandusky; 20 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Isham and Barbara Smith; and his previous wife, Jacqueline Smith.
Visitation for family and friends will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday, October 6, 2018 in Providence Baptist Church, 224 Dixie Ave., Sandusky, OH 44870. Funeral services will begin at 11 a.m. with Pastor Joseph Strong officiating and Superintendent Ross Johnson delivering the eulogy.
