Joan attended the Cleveland Public Schools through the fifth grade, moving to Fairview Park where she graduated high school. After graduation, she worked as a clerk-typist for a distributor of nuts and bolts in Cleveland. While running her own business, she also helped her husband Bill with his businesses in Sandusky before her retirement in 2005.

Joan was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Sandusky, where she was a very active member over the years. Her involvement with the church included; serving on the church council for several terms, secretary for a three-year term, council president from 1996-1998; sang in the church choir; served on the Stewardship Finance, building/property committees and helped with the development of the outdoor alter on the church grounds. Joan also served on other boards, committees and associations in the Sandusky and Cleveland area. In 1998 she received the "Woman of Excellence Award".

She is survived by one sister-in-law, Sarah Leach of Cleveland; step grandchildren, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William A. "Bill" Strouse in 1983 whom she married in 1961; her parents, and one brother.

Friends will be received on Thursday, November 1, 2018 from 10:00 AM until time of Memorial Service at 10:30 AM in the St. Paul Lutheran Church, 2211 Mills Street, Sandusky, Ohio 44870. Pastor Bill Schroeder will officiate.
