James T. Schaffer

James T. Schaffer, 85, of Monroeville, passed away Sunday afternoon, February 24, 2019 at Parkvue Health Care Center after a brief illness.

Jim was born at home on March 31, 1933 in Monroeville, OH to the late Theodore J. and Gladys (Greenfelder) Schaffer.

He helped on the family farm until he was drafted into the US Army in 1954. He was a 1951 graduate of Monroeville High School. Jim married his life-long partner, Loretta M. Bertsch on December 30, 1954. They built their first and only home in 1956. After his Honorable Discharge, he worked at grain elevators until he found his talent as an electrician. He and his partner founded J & J Electric Inc. in 1963 and for 45 years he worked in this profession.

Jim was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. Through the years in the community, he also was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Monroeville #1117, FOE, AERIE #711 Norwalk, Elks Lodge #285 Sandusky, Monroeville Kiwanis, American Legion and American Builders and Contractors.

Jim enjoyed reading the Cleveland Plain Dealer EVERY DAY, enjoyed working in his yard, especially when he had his own tractors. He also grew a vineyard of grapes, which he enjoyed sharing with family and friends in the making of wine, jelly, and juice. He was an avid Cleveland Indians, Browns, Cavs and Ohio State fan.

Jim is survived by his wife of 64 years, Loretta (Bertsch) Schaffer. He is also survived by his sons, Edward J. Schaffer of Johnstown, OH and Allen C. (Michele) Schaffer of Columbus; grandchildren, David, Andrew, Christopher, Kaytlin, Abigail, and Lara Schaffer; sisters, Kathleen Schloemer of Willard, Patricia Steiber and Ruth Weinserberger both of Norwalk; brothers, Theodore (Florence) Jr. of Sandusky, Jack (Patricia) of Norwalk and William (Joan) Schaffer of Willard: in-laws, F.J and Mary Jane Dick of Attica, Leroy Miller of Bellevue and Theresa Schaffer of Norwalk and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

In addition to his parents, Jim is preceded in death by his sisters, Barbara Miller and Joanne Dick and brothers, Thomas P. (Rosemary) and Charles Schaffer.

Friends may call on Thursday, February 28, 2019 from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Groff Funeral Homes & Crematory, 1607 E Perkins Ave, Sandusky. Prayers will be recited in the funeral home on Friday, March 1, 2019 at 9:30 am followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, 510 Columbus Ave., Sandusky. Father Monte Hoyles will officiate. Entombment will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Sandusky.
