John Kenneth Marett, 81, passed on Monday, March 11, 2019 in Bradenton, Florida, following a brief illness. John was a friend to all, a mentor, a coach, a counselor and a consoler. He lived his life as a true disciple and a witness to his Catholic faith.
John was born on February 20, 1938 in New London, Ohio.
He was a graduate of New London High School, Ashland College, and Atlanta University. He began his teaching career as a social studies teacher in Clear Fork, Ohio, and he taught at EHOVE JVS during its opening year in 1968. He then worked as a guidance counselor at EHOVE from 1969 until his retirement in 1995. As a teacher and guidance counselor, he loved working with students and teachers, and he impacted many lives. He was a role model to his children and instilled honesty and integrity in his sons.
John was involved in many sporting activities. He was a t-ball and little league baseball coach, a Cub Scout leader, a tennis player and Edison High School tennis coach, and an avid pickleball player. He was a basketball referee for many years, and a fan of the Cleveland Browns, Cleveland Indians, Cleveland Cavaliers, Las Vegas Golden Knights, and Ohio State and Notre Dame Football. He was a big supporter of Edison High School sports teams.
John loved playing all card games, especially euchre. He was a fan of classic country music, and he liked to play practical jokes with his friends. He enjoyed traveling with Ann and took many trips throughout the country and abroad. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and a former member of St. Anthony Parish Council, where he also served as a lector and Eucharistic minister.
John is survived by his wife of 41 years, Ann (Mock); four sons, Mark Marett, Rich Marett and wife, Donna Boose Marett, John Edward Marett, and Christopher Marett and wife, Caitlin Cardina. He is also survived by grandchildren, Sara Marett Bingham (Derrick) of Las Vegas, Austin Marett of Las Vegas, Solomon and Rosalie Marett of Cincinnati, Christina Lake of Las Vegas, Michael Lake of Nashville; two great-grandchildren, Aiden and Addison Hemenway of Las Vegas. He is also survived by his exchange son, Diego Arcila-Arteaga and fiancée, Kaitlin Fitzpatrick, and his niece and her husband, Callie Broomfield (Adam Swank) and nephews, Craig Emerson (Mary) and Eric Emerson (Nikki) and two nieces, Ava and Madelyne Emerson. John is also survived by many cousins and friends in Milan, Norwalk, New London, and Palmetto, Florida.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Cecil and Jennirose Marett of New London, and sister, Mary Ann Emerson of Windsor, Virginia, his nephew, Jimmy Broomfield, aunts and uncles, and many cousins.
Friends may visit on Sunday, March 17, 2019 from 3-6 pm at the Groff Funeral Homes & Crematory Milan Chapel, 1 S. Main St., Milan. A celebration of life Mass will be at 10:00 am Monday, March 18 at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, 145 S. Center St., Milan. Father Ron Schock will officiate. Burial will follow in St. Anthony's Catholic Cemetery, Milan.
John will live on in the memories of all those impacted by his life well lived.
