Jacklyn (Darby) Kaufman

Jacklyn (Darby) Kaufman, 80, a lifelong resident of Sandusky, left this world surrounded by her family on Saturday, April 27, 2019 to be with her deceased infant son, Matthew Darby Kaufman, in the kingdom of Our Lord Jesus Christ.

Jackie was born on March 30, 1939 in Sandusky, OH as the only daughter of former Sandusky Police Chief Jack E. Darby and Elsie (Brushaber) Darby, the former Chief Operator for Ohio Bell Telephone Co. She was born on the night of the big downtown Sandusky fire while her father helped fight the blaze.

Jackie graduated from Sandusky High School in the class of 1957, the last class to graduate from the old Sandusky High School building. Following graduation from high school, she attended Toledo Hospital School of Nursing and the University of Toledo where she earned her RN certification and license.

Jackie married her high school sweetheart, Ronald G. Kaufman, in 1960, following which she served as a nurse at both Good Samaritan Hospital and Firelands Regional Medical Center. As a very accomplished labor and delivery nurse, Jackie served as the Obstetrics Supervisor at both hospitals. Her nursing career was bifurcated by having four (4) sons, during which time she worked PRN, served as a volunteer Camp Fire Girl camp nurse, an American Red Cross blood bank nurse, and as an instructor at the Sandusky School of Practical Nursing. She spent all of her nursing career lovingly bringing children into this world or caring for them.

Jackie loved playing duplicate bridge, as well as following her children and five (5) grandchildren throughout their athletic and academic careers. We know her deepest regret will be not being able to continue being here to support her grandchildren as they grow up. Her home was always the gathering point for the neighborhood children and her sons' friends. Two of those neighborhood children, Kay Holmes Adcox and Paul Linnemeier, "adopted" the family, and are thought of as children of the Kaufman family. Jackie was also a member of Emmanuel United Church of Christ and the Senior Center Bridge Club, and a former member of the Sandusky Yacht Club and Plum Brook Country Club.

Jackie is survived by her husband of almost 59 years, Ronald G. Kaufman; three wonderful sons and two wonderful daughters-in-law, Christopher D. Kaufman, Jonathan D. Kaufman, married to Melissa (Mehling) Kaufman, and Michael D. Kaufman, married to Sarah (Schindley) Kaufman; five wonderful grandchildren, Ashley, Jackson, Braden, Cameron, and Reagan Kaufman; a close and loved cousin, Constance Schreiner Fais; many other cousins, nieces and nephews; and her two Siamese cats, Rosy and Pansy.

In addition to her parents, Jackie is preceded in death by her first son, Matthew D. Kaufman; and several aunts, uncles, brothers-in-law and sisters-in law.

Friends may call on Sunday, May 5, 2019 from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Groff Funeral Homes & Crematory, 1607 E Perkins Ave, Sandusky. Friends may also call on Monday, May 6, 2019 in the funeral home from 9:30 am until the time of funeral services at 11:00 am. Retired Reverend Monty Kaufman will officiate. Burial will follow in Oakland Cemetery, Sandusky, OH.
