Spencer Scott Rumer, 17, a Perkins High School junior, of Sandusky, earned his angel wings Tuesday morning, September 17, 2019 in Cleveland Clinic, surrounded by his closest friends and family.
He fought Synovial Sarcoma most of his life. He was diagnosed in 2010 at age 8. He was very determined to beat cancer, but a "cure" was not found.
Spencer was born on January 14, 2002 and loved sharing a birthday with his mother.
He was a creative boy who quickly grew a passion for art. Spencer participated in The Scholastic Art Exhibit where he was honored with a golden key, three silver keys, and several honorable mentions. Recently, Spencer, along with his sister, was featured in the ROYGBIV art exhibit at The Carri G Art Gallery in Sandusky.
Spencer was a patient at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, TN from 2010-2015. He became a patient at Cleveland Clinic in 2013. Spencer also participated in a clinical trial at The Texas Children's Hospital. In Cleveland, he recently participated in a research study with nuclear radiation. His treatments will go on to help others.
Spencer loved spending time with his friend group, playing PS4 and listening to late 60's music. He had a love for The Mommas and The Poppas, especially Cass Elliot, Janice Joplin, Spanky and Our Gang, Amy Winehouse, and jazz singer, Sarah Vaughn, and most recently, Sir Elton John. Some would say Spencer had an old soul. He always had a smile on his face! He was loved!
Spencer is survived by his mother, Lisa (Birmelin) Bogan, and her husband, Bernard Bogan; father, Sterling Rumer, and his wife Amy (Altomore) Rumer; brother, Zach Birmelin, and his wife, Brooke (Workman) Birmelin; sister, Kylee Frederick, and her significant other, Dan Miller; three nephews, Bradford Birmelin, Dominic Birmelin, and Layne Miller; grandmothers, Wilma Birmelin and Scharlet Rumer; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his great-grandmother, Edith Howard Hale; and both grandfathers,
Fred Birmelin and Gene Rumer, Sr.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. on Saturday, September 21 until funeral services begin at 12 p.m. in Faith Memorial Church, 1320 E. Strub Rd., Sandusky. Rev. Ken Hiser will officiate.
